Carpet fitters refused to finish laying carpet unless i paid them more

Hello, Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

local carpet fitters. I took my measurments in (I have done this before with previous carpets) for a bedroom and a living room carpet. I live in a flat and both my bedroom and living room are the exact same size and shape.

They came and fit the bedroom carpet then fit the underlay in the living room, they then got the carpet and rolled it out and it was way too small. he got annoyed then told me I got the measurements wrong and if I wanted him to finish the job I would have to pay an extra £80. Either that or he was leaving.

I had just paid £500 for the carpets and underlay and genuinely didn't have an extra £80 to give him so he left me with underlay down.

I went into the carpet shop and asked to see the measurements they had, they were correct. I then asked why I was charged extra and they said because I got the measurements wrong, i asked how that was the case when the bedroom one was the exact same size and fitted perfectly and they told me to leave!

They are not budging and won't finish the job unless I pay.

Where do I go from here?

How big was the underlay?

How big is the space?

What measurements did you give them?

Is the carpet rolled up in your home? Have you measured it?

TwoBlueFish · 10/10/2024 12:32

Did you actually measure or just assume they were the same size because they’re on top of each other? Did they measure the too small part to see if it matched your measurements? We’re both rooms from the same piece of carpet? If they were did they add some on for wastage?

If the measurements were wrong, how did the underlay fit?

amothersinstinct · 10/10/2024 12:44

Very unusual for two rooms of different use to be exactly the same size....Is one slightly different shape but overall if you measured them the same size? The shape can affect wastage and seaming plans - no two rooms are exactly the same

Surely the measurements argument is easily solved. They can come and measure it themselves. Either you’re right or not. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Why has this not happened?
