What is this smell

In my kitchen. It smells like cat pee ( ammonia) - it's not cat pee. The plumber couldn't smell it. I can't work out where it's coming from. I checked under the sink but the smell is less there. I checked the plughole - nope. Doesn't seem to be strong around my washing machine.

Do you have house plants in the kitchen, mine sometimes have soil/ cat/ earthy smell after I’ve watered them.

Could there be a dead mouse in the wall or under the floorboards? We had this problem in our old house and the smell was awful.

Probably a dead mouse. I've got one decomposing slowly in a hole I can't get to. It's absolutely rank. Just wonder how long it takes to stop smelling?

Had the same smell in my bedroom last night, very odd and couldn't track it down. I wondered if a plant in the garden was giving off a weird smell , happens sometimes. It's not there this morning.

If you have any football/rugby players, wet boots can smell like this?

LuLuRN · 10/10/2024 10:37

You get a strange kind of fishy smell from burnt out electrics.

Afriendwithbreastsandalltherest · 10/10/2024 10:38

Rotting onions or potatoes in the back of a cupboard or drawer

I get this smell a lot because I suffer with my sinuses, theres a medical term for smelling things that arent there, I get it a lot, toast, fags, cat wee, ammonia, etc

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/10/2024 12:24

Maybe the fridge thing at the bottom needs cleaning, can't remember the name of it?!

Another person who visits frequently has mentioned it too though.

Also, it's only at particular times that we can smell it, not all the time. Off to Google dead mouse smell ( or maybe not ,)

Is someone smoking or even growing weed nearby? That can smell like cat pee. We had it wafting around our kitchen door and I can only assume that air sort of eddies there so the smell lingers.
