Eye colour change at puberty

Just wondering if anyone else's DC's eyes changed colour during adolescence? DD was born with blue eyes but between the ages of 11 and 13 she started to get an orangey/gold brown ring in the middle of the pupil. Eye tests have been normal but I've never thought to mention it specifically to the optician. They now look kind of hazel with an outer edge of blue. It's called central heterochromia or "sunflower eyes" apparently.

I suddenly had a bit of a panic (thanks anxiety) about whether this is a worrying symptom of something. It looks like there are some diseases that can cause this but most seem to be if only one eye is affected and the changes are the same in both.

Not sure if there is any link but she has been getting migraines for the last 18 months and is taking daily topiramate but there's nothing listed in the side effects. She had a normal brain MRI and thorough eye test about 9 months ago when we first got the medication.

Just hoping for some reassurance that this is a normal change and nothing medically worrying?

The same has happened to my son. Always had blue eyes but recently a brown/gold ring has developed around the pupil. He's 13. I never even thought to be concerned about it! I have mostly green eyes with a gold ring though, so it seems normal to me.

DS’s eye colour didn’t change but his colouring changed - he went much darker and his light brown hair that bleached blonde in the sun turned black. His own sister didn’t recognise him when she came back from 3 months abroad.

Yep went from blue to grey/green. Blond to auburn, too.

I know someone who had blue eyes then went green as a teen. Proper green. She hates them and wants them blue again but I keep telling her how rare and beautiful they are!

Mine went from cornflower blue to boring dull green/grey.

That exact thing happened to my eyes at about the same age. Still got the sunflower ring now decades later and it’s never been a symptom of anything else. My dad had the same ring so maybe it can be a genetic thing?

My husband has the central heterochromia ring too! I must ask when he first noticed it. We met in our mid twenties and have been together almost 13 years - it hasn't caused him any issues.

I have this too, it looks like I have a dark blue ring round my iris, then blue, then a brighter gold inner ring. It has changed and continues to change during my life as well. My youngest son has it too.

Drunk people on nights out often tell me my eyes are amazing so it must be true 🙄

Sparxdislike · 10/10/2024 14:51

My sons have gone from blue to green with amber specks in.

tootsiewoo · 10/10/2024 14:56

My daughter has went from bright blue to green with amber specks too

pipmay · 10/10/2024 15:02

my DS has changed from blue to green, my mother apparently did the same. She has stayed green eyed.

My eldest DD's eyes gradually changed from blue to green throughout her childhood- she's 13 now and I think they have reached their final colour!
They are a very similar colour to mine now and I do remember mine changing to green too when I was 9/10 ish.
When she was little they definitely weren't the same colour as my eyes.
I think eye colour does change through childhood sometimes especially with green/blue eyes

Green eyes are the rarest colour only 9 percent of the world population have green eyes.

Well I swore my DS had blue eyes. He always had blue eyes. Apparently, since he was a teenager they've been green like mine. Full points for me being observant. And the amount of times I've said that both mine have blue eyes ...

I don't think you need to worry.

Konfuzzled · 10/10/2024 16:46

Thank you everyone I feel a lot better now. Was just worried when I (stupidly) Googled and of course it said that it can be a sign of a disease or tumour!

Never heard of that! But it could be something to do with AI generated results perhaps. In any case, a lot of people’s eyes change colour, even in subtle ways over time. Mine were green from a young age but I don’t remember exactly when they went from blue to green. I’m adopted but do know both bio parents and all my siblings had brown eyes. B-aunt has green eyes and her kids have a mix of green and blue.
