Royal Mail next day delivery

At 5:20pm I went to my local post office and asked for a letter to be sent next day recorded delivery. The guy behind the counter explained I had missed the slot for next day delivery. So it would get there for the day after. I said this is fine, as it was quite late in the day, and asked when the cut off point is for next day delivery. He explained the post man could come at any time and he couldn’t give me a time. He then explained it would be better if I came in to post the letter the next day and I explained I couldn’t and I’d like to process it today. The guy gave me a really weird look and I then felt prompted to say I couldn’t come in next day as I had engagements all day. He then said he was only trying to help me - which was a bizarre statement to make. He then said he couldn’t process next day delivery and it would now take up to 2-3 days for the letter to go and asked if I was ok with that. I explained no - but if that’s all that can be done, then that’s that. He then got funny and said he was doing all he could to help me. He was behaving in a really weird and defensive way. I was polite the whole time. I then simply asked if I could pay and go because he was making me feel very uncomfortable. He didn’t behave this way with the male customer who was before me.

Can anyone explain what the Royal Mail rules are for recorded next day delivery, and why now my letter will take 2-3 days to get to its destination? It’s an important letter and is time sensitive. The post office is in a busy town - it’s like I am based somewhere remote.

Thank you.

it could be anything. Maybe he was afraid you might make a complaint about him over something that he doesn’t have any control over or maybe you weren’t aware of your tone.
maybe today he couldn’t process “next day delivery” for in two days time which is why he asked you to come in early tomorrow and the only available option was for a few days?
Is there any chance you can go to the post office early and just be a bit late to your first meeting

I’m a very polite person - nothing wrong with my tone!

Was it Special Delivery you wanted?
Or Tracked 24?
This is what the Special Delivery info says

I used to be at the post office a lot (now I get Royalmail to collect from me).

The mail is usually collected around the same time everyday from each post office, so that's a weird thing to say. He must have a rough idea.

Generally if you miss the pick up for that day they process it, you pay and it goes in the mail bag to be collected the next day.

Recorded delivery isn't guaranteed next day, it just means you get a signature on delivery.

Special Delivery is guaranteed by next day.

If the postman has already made the last collection from that PO then obviously it can't be delivered the next day as it just stays in the PO until the following day's pick-up.

What is odd though is the PO staff would know what time the collections are, in our local one it's 4 times a day, last one is 4pm.
What you were told doesn't make any sense
