Really dull question about parcels

BabyElephantish · 08/10/2024 15:48

Postman asks if you could take in a parcel for 2 doors down as they're out. He puts a note in their door saying it's at number X.

Would you say it's more your responsibility to take the parcel to them?

Or more their responsibility to collect the parcel?

Or equal responsibility?

Yes it's dull, yes it doesn't matter, I'm just pondering is all 🙂

I wait for them to come to me. I'm not going to put myself out to rake it round tbh. I already answered the door so that's my part done. I'm willing to be considered awkward though.

AnotherDelphinium · 08/10/2024 15:50

Their responsibility to collect, but after a few days of no-shows I’d stick a note through their door reminding them!

If they had attempted collection (ie seen on the video doorbell) I’d attempt to deliver to them.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2024 15:53

You never know whether they've seen the missed parcel card (I've had them slip under the bench or the mat in the hall before). For this reason, I always take it over when I sse they're in unless they've come to me first.

I'd rather be rid of the parcel than play some stubborn game of It's Not My Job.

BabyElephantish · 08/10/2024 15:57

Interesting. My initial thought was it's up to them to collect but then I got thinking that it could be viewed that I've taken the parcel therefore it's up to me to give it back. Hmm

I'm trapped under a breastfeeding baby hence the dull wonderings!

Agree with this. But if you're unable to then if course that's fine, it's their parcel their responsibility.

WearyLady · 08/10/2024 16:25

Depends on your circimstances. If you're busy (as you seem to be), there's no obligation to take the parcel round to your neighbours. It's a nice thing to do but, ultimately, it's down to them to pick it up.

Cookerhood · 08/10/2024 16:34

I tend to wait a bit, say until after dinner & if they don't come round I'll take it. I often find that although they say a card has been left, it isn't.

PuppyMonkey · 08/10/2024 16:41

According to previous MN threads, you should hang onto this parcel and keep it in your hallway indefinitely - even if it blocks your entrance for the next 18 months - until the neighbour comes to pick it up. Grin

TeenToTwenties · 08/10/2024 16:42

Their responsibility, you have done them a favour.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 08/10/2024 16:51

I'd say generally their responsibility. Nowadays most notifications are by email or text, so the old 'no card' or 'card under the mat' are very unlikely.

I must have imagined the cards (Evri and Royal Mail) I've had in the last month then.

Me too!

Thereisnoname · 08/10/2024 17:34

Depends if I like them or not.
1 neighbour is a bit grumpy about taking parcels so I try and go and collect it ASAP

Other neighbours its about 50/50 they'll collect or we'll take It round but they're lovely so don't mind. Sometimes they are very heavy so I'll go round and ask them to come and collect it.

Think if you take them In often and they never collect they're taking the piss.

ahemfem · 08/10/2024 17:36

They should get it but I like my neighbours and pop it round after a couple of days

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/10/2024 17:40

I usually send the kids round and they do vice versa. I like my neighbours.

anonyanonyanon · 08/10/2024 17:56

I'd just take it round. these days they probably have no idea its with you.

MargaretThursday · 08/10/2024 18:00

I take it round. More than once the wrong number's been put on the card (or no number).

BabyElephantish · 08/10/2024 18:02

I was planning to drop in over tomorrow if it wasn't collected but it's now gone.

There definitely was a card as they waved it along with "you have my parcel" when I opened the door. They seemed annoyed I had it! Not a hint of a smile or a thanks for taking it in.
Oh well.

I always take them to the intended recipient.
It's nice to be nice.
