What's an Emo in 2024? From what I remember in my time, Emos were the alternative but kind of cool kids. They tended to hang out with other Emos talking about cool music and wearing edgy clothes (when not in school).

My young teens tell me that Emo is a really negative label and would be horrified to be thought of as one. Why is Emo supposed to be a dig? Is it a TikTok thing?

My daughter says that emos are the ones who do stuff like self harm for attention.

I find it fascinating how slang and language changes over the years. From a musical genre and associated styles (shout out to My Chemical Romance 💕) to an attention seeking person with mental health issues, more like emotionally needy rather than emotional rock?

Who remembers the media being up in arms about Emo back in the 2000s.

I too thought it was a 2000s thing and kind of cool. But sounds like it's a new way of being derogatory about other teens.

That's really sad.

Don't get me wrong, she self harms, but is ND and does it when she's disregulated and has done since she was tiny. But she knows people who do it like a hobby and go around showing off their scars.
