What are your hobbies that you do at home?

Looking for inspiration for hobbies that I can do at home apart from baking and reading as I do those already. I like crafty things BUT I am rubbish at them and can't think of them from my own head, I do sometimes recreate very basic things from a video. Can you tell me your hobbies that you do at home?Smile

I knit, crochet and sometimes sew. Crochet is very easy to learn with a basic book and YouTube. With crochet, start with something like a stash basket - very easy to make and useful as well. I used to be terrible at both crochet and knitting but with a lot of practice I'm now quite competent.

If you can sew even a bit, patchwork might be worth a try. There are some types of patchwork that don't require precision so you can learn the basics that way before you start to get fussy about matching everything properly.

We sometimes brew beer or cider; I make jam and marmalade - not every year, I'm not organised enough for that.

Someone I used to know at work did amazing calligraphy.

Have you got a garden? You can do all sorts, even in a small space: herbs and tomatoes as wells flowers.

@MissyGirlie I always wondered with crochet; the better you get, do you start to free reign it or do you always follow patterns?

Don't have a garden unfortunately Sad

Exercise - nothing much, just stretches, basic dumbbell exercises, basic bodyweight exercises or follow along basic videos on YouTube. I have some dumbbells, a yoga mat, resistance band, few basics like that and that's enough.

Colouring in.

Writing poetry.

Time40 · 06/10/2024 22:29

I sew, and also make candles.

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/10/2024 22:29

I sew, I have made costumes and props for theatre productions in the past and as favours for people. Made a full suit of armour once.

Gaming, I’m currently building a Japanese cherry tree blossom temple in Minecraft. I built a fab underwater rollercoaster that went through a coral garden. I also help run a gaming clan and do the highest level content in the game I play.

Cooking dishes from my Dads home country.

Flower arranging, not often as so expensive. I have made some cute miniature gardens in big plant pots with miniature alpines and aquarium ornaments. Some vegetable growing and chutney making. I have written poetry as well but I do not share it with people except DH.

Great question - ALL my hobbies are ones I do from home. But I have too many so I’m not particularly good at any one of them. Never mind, I still love them!

What about family history? Or musical instruments? You can get lots of online lessons so you don’t even need to go out for tuition.

I do a lot of knitting/crochet (and spinning and weaving) and there is absolutely no shame in using patterns all the time rather than making up your own design. It’s no different from using a recipe for baking!

Adult colouring
Board games
Researching random stuff on the internet
Home exercise videos

I cross stitch! Keeps me busy and is easier than some other crafts (well I think so anyway). Can be relatively cheap too and you can get great starter kits from hobbycraft that have everything you need to begin.

You have really cool hobbies! Would you be willing to share a pic of one of the miniature gardens as they sound amazing?

Like a PP I knit. I don't have the patience for jumpers or large projects so I knit small things: cats, teddies, frogs wearing jumpers, sea creatures, flowers, tea cosies; even a little Andy Murray!
I also crochet and tapestry.

I was given a marquetry kit once that was very fun to do and made a beautiful picture.

SunsetSkylane · 06/10/2024 22:37

Photo editing; I go shooting about once a month then edit a photo every day until the next shoot.

Practice my musical instrument.

Catsmere · 06/10/2024 22:38

I knit. I'm in a knitting group, so do the simple part of whatever I'm doing there, and the fiddly bits that need concentration at home. I make jumpers, cardigans, hats and scarves for myself.

Other than that I play simple games like Freecell or Tetris-like puzzles or jigsaws on my iPad.

MissRoseDurward · 06/10/2024 22:39

Family history. (If your family has UK roots) You'll need a paid for subscription to Ancestry or FindMyPast, but you'd equally have to buy materials or equipment for most other hobbies.

(I recommend the FMP subscription that includes local newspapers. You can spend hours on there, and find out all sorts of surprising things.)

wavingfuriously · 06/10/2024 22:46

Really great thread. good to read some people have time and energy to do creative things. all I seem to manage is work, do endless household chores or slump in front of the tv!
where do you get the time from? atb

Spagettifunction · 06/10/2024 22:48

Thinking of getting a walking pad
I also like gardening and interiors (doing up small pieces of furniture etc)

but would love ideas

TheChosenTwo · 06/10/2024 22:49

I like jigsaws and colouring in. I promise I’m not 5 😂 I love that they take me away from screens completely and that sometimes my dc wander in and get absorbed in it with me and then wander off again and leave me to it.

tiredwoman123 · 06/10/2024 22:50

I crochet, I love it.

Look up Bellacoco on YouTube and search for her beginner videos. That's how I learnt.

BloodandGlitter · 06/10/2024 22:51

Sculpting - air dry clay, foam clay, polymer clay all fun. I make stupid things like worms to go in my terrarium or a pokeball mimic, just anything that sounds fun.
Art
Sewing
Journalling
Resin can be fun too.
Learning to do my own gel nails right now. Kind of crap at it but I'll get better.
Diamond painting! Cute kits from Aliexpress for £4 or £5 then I get a cool picture to display after.
Anything creative really, I watch various youtubers doing different arts and crafts things then decide I can do it myself. Grin

waltzingparrot · 06/10/2024 22:57

I learnt chess and now play online with people from all over the world.

Jk987 · 06/10/2024 23:00

Mumsnetters don't normally like to say!
So many annoying posts saying 'DH was out all morning at his hobby' or 'I do my hobby 2 evenings a week'😄

mondaytosunday · 06/10/2024 23:03

Crochet. Do some small scale mosaic stuff. Used to do wet felting but that is messy and you have to commit to four hours at least.

Jakadaal · 06/10/2024 23:08

Crochet, sewing, flower arranging type crafts (door wreaths etc)

I started crocheting in the pandemic and followed Bella Crochet on You Tube. There are loads of free patterns on Pinterest. I have done a few blankets but tend to do small projects like pumpkins, bags etc. if you start to crochet you will find another hobby - buying and collecting wool 🤣

missymousey · 06/10/2024 23:09

Cross-stitch kits - I love these because they're small so I have one in my handbag and can do it at odd moments when I might otherwise be scrolling my phone.
