Preppy....

Just spent the weekend with ten of my daughter's friends, all 9 or 10. All I heard from them all day yesterday was 'that's so preppy', 'you're so preppy' or 'heyyyy preppies'. Seriously wanted to rip my ears off after a while.. what does it even mean and why do they say it all the time. Leads me to my question. What is the most annoying phrase/word your kids have picked up?

Do they mean as an insult or compliment? 🤨 preppy to me is like 'prep school' and a fashion thing?

WaneyEdge · 06/10/2024 18:45

The only time I recall hearing it was on Saved by the Bell. Slater who was a ‘jock’ used to say it to Zack.

Hannahandlucy · 06/10/2024 18:45

Oh it seems to definitely be a compliment of some description

Preppy has been a word for a long time, at least since the 80s. It meant American high school fashion.

Old money is a big trend. Preppy is presumably part of that

TreesWelliesKnees · 06/10/2024 18:47

It's come back into fashion recently with a slight difference, i think. It means pretty in a conventional sort of way. Probably come from TikTok.

As a parent of a teen and preteen I can tell you preppy means colourful, pink, cute etc. It's a compliment. It's a cute girly aesthetic, will often be said in a sentence with Slay, etc 🤣

Like this? I thought it was all plaid miniskirts, starched collars and Argyll jumpers! (No preteens to consult.)

Preppy....

My lot won’t shut up about avocados from Mexico… I did enquire wtf they were on about but they just gave me withering looks 🤷‍♀️

Curtainpots · 06/10/2024 19:02

yes the meaning has changed! I thought it was the plaid skirts etc but apparently it’s now pastels, cartoony type flowers and anything cute

User645262 · 06/10/2024 19:05

Preppy is what Millenials knew as the Victoria's Secret aesthetic. Pink, gold, pastels, flowers, girly, cute, California vibes. The previous definition of preppy/Sloaney is now old money (upper class style like Ralph Lauren, pleated skirts, loafers etc)

RandomUsernameHere · 06/10/2024 19:07

I thought it meant quite a conventional style consisting of shirts, cable knit sweaters, that sort of thing, but I may be completely wrong or the meaning has changed!

BowTiesPinkTail · 06/10/2024 19:13

I would say yes but with a bit more of an update - pink Stanley's, all things pink and cute pastel colours and girly but not quite like Legally blonde (so not heels or the likes) - probably a touch cuter (imagine cute/cartooney) - my girls are also into Sanrio (hello kitty, kuromi that sort of thing 🙈 honestly my head is mashed with it all 🤣)

WonderingWanda · 06/10/2024 19:20

At least it was only preppy and not skibbidy, rizz or ohio.....a whole language of gibberish!

BowTiesPinkTail · 06/10/2024 19:21

I've just been corrected by my smallest - apparently I'm confusing kawaii and Preppy - she has told me pastels and Sanrio are kawaaii and preppy is Stanley's and bright colours but cute ...I'm going to find a dark room to hide away from my confusing gen Alpha's 🙃

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/10/2024 19:23

Yeah my DD and her friends say this. It isn’t an insult or a compliment it’s just a label. She is cottage core and her friend is preppy. Apparently I’m retro lol

ImthatBoleyngirl · 06/10/2024 19:29

Skibbidy toilet, Ohio, Bro, Bruh, Slay, Mid, Sigma. I love using their "language" in public to embarass them 🤣

BowTiesPinkTail · 06/10/2024 19:32

Lol me too! 🤣
