Scared when dh is away at night.

My dh is away next week with work, doesn't happen very often but when it does I can't sleep. I get worked up, anxious and scared there is someone trying to break in. I'm listening out for noises and I'm just on edge and exhausted the next day. I feel a bit pathetic about it, I used to live alone and was fine but now I really freak myself out.
If anyone else is like this do you have any tips for me so I can sleep.

My dad was a policeman when my parents got married and my mum went from living with her parents and 2 sisters to living with my dad. On his first night shift after they married she was alone for the first time and was petrified and hearing all sorts of noises. She said she had to have stern word with herself and go and see what the noises were because otherwise she'd have driven herself mad with the worry and this was going to be her life from then onwards. As my dad remained in the police service for 30 years this was a good plan. Once she'd seen the noise was nothing to worry about she was able to set down and sleep as opposed to laying there shivering with fright. She said it was scary the first few times but then she got to recognise the noises and knew that when she heard a certain noise it was an underground train going past or the neighbours and nothing to worry about.
