Hi all,
My 13 year old dd has a long, thick head of black hair! We are finding it tricky to get a shampoo and conditioner. ATM after washing and drying her hair it looks greasy and heavy.
Her hair is naturally oily.
Would any of you have an suggestions of a shampoo that you/your daughter uses that would give her hair a nice clean and light feel when washed?
Thanks so much!

My daughter uses Tresemme and that cleans really well, it works really well on grease

At 13 her hormones are probably causing the excessive grease build up. This happened with my son as soon as he hit puberty.

However I am hair crazy so a few suggestions.

  1. Double Shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, these can tend to be harsh so she might wanna do it every other wash.
  2. Only use conditioner on the lengths not on the scalp
  3. As soon as she’s out the bath & dried her hair use dry shampoo. People tend to use dry shampoo once their hair starts to look greasy. However it works best using it on fresh hair so it starts to absorb the grease as soon as it starts appearing. Then she can top up ever day or so.
  4. Try to avoid washing everyday as if you wash it daily this’ll be the routine her hair will come accustomed to & everyday it’ll look built up with grease. I wash my hair once a week however, like I said her greasy hair is more than likely due to hormones so she may need to wash it more often but you should eventually be able to build up to more days. On the days it starts looking greasy whack it up.
  5. Aviod over brushing.

It might not solve the issue right away but you gotta stick with to start seeing results.

Clear shampoo! Don't use anything creamy. My hair will be greasy by the end of the day if I do but if the actual shampoo if clear then I find it stays cleaned for much longer.

Thanks guys for your advice! Will try all in coming weeks. Interesting about the dry shampoo straight after you do your hair as it starts to absorb grease straight away.

Blow drying her hair kight reduce some of the greasy feeling. Air drying definitely leaves my hair greasy

Try Aveeno apple cider shampoo and conditioner.

The purple L'Oréal - Hydra pure I think its called has really worked for me and DD

OUAI detox shampoo has worked for me to get rid of build up, so might be good for oily/hormonal hair. I use it every 2-3 months now.

I also like Redken volume injection shampoo and conditioner.

If she’ll trim it up a bit, a few inches off can do wonders for ‘heavy’ weighed down looking hair. It’s better to have it 2 inches shorter than to look like the girl from The Ring.

interested in your username. Do you sell when you get fed up with the jumpers/yarn?

The whole "don't wash it every day or it'll be more greasy" thing is nonsense. She has greasy hair therefore NEEDS to wash it daily.

My teenage daughter was getting terribly greasy hair, despite hair washing every morning.

This head and shoulders shampoo works wonders. Her hair will last 48 hours between washing now!

And skip conditioner. Just once every now and then, only on the ends.
