Sorry, nothing like the title might suggest Grin

He is adamant a Peugeot 3008 (2024 plate) is an SUV. I said it's definitely not an SUV. It's tiny!

He works with cars and says it definitely is.

I wondered if anyone who knew anything about them could confirm? If it is an 'SUV', it's a tiny one surely?

Saw it mentioned on here, looked it up and it is smaller than my Seat Arona.

Most people will actually look at one before buying it.

So it they see it and believe it’s too small for their needs, they won’t buy it.

Dont see how it’s unfair at all.

WaneyEdge · 06/10/2024 11:38

Our local car wash classes Nissan Jukes as SUVs. Lots of cars are bigger, I suspect it’s so they can charge the extra £3 to wash it 😁

After a bit more digging, it seems to be sold as a family SUV, not a compact SUV. How can that be the case when it's so compact and cramped inside?

I drive a seat arona which is bigger with a bigger boot - and that's still a small SUV

The Peugeot 3008 is bigger than. Seat arona

Lots of SUVs aren't 4 wheel drive though.

Oh, are they not? I assumed it was the main feature of them.

So what specifically defines an SUV, then?

It’s a strange one. The argument is that 2WD is more fuel efficient to compensate for all the extra weight of driving an SUV about. But then, if you haven’t 4WD, what’s the point of putting up with the extra weight? I’d sooner take a nippy 2WD hatchback into rural depths than a big unwieldy beast without 4x4.

It seems to be that people just want bloody huge cars now, either as fashion or because they feel a lot safer driving a big unit, and the manufactures are meeting the demand.

Edited to add: A sport utility vehicle was normally defined by 4x4 and ground clearance, so I suppose still having the ground clearance makes them an SUV.

The Arona is much smaller than a 3008 though. It’s a similar size to a 2008. Are you are you’re looking at the right car…? Incidentally, Arona gets spell-checked to Arouser if you’re not careful 🤣🤣

@duvetstealer seems they're trying to sell it that way then

It's tiny. Seems really unfair marketing to say it's an SUV

Must be the most compact one I've ever seen

Sports Utility Vehicle

Nothing says it has to be big.

I bought a two wheel drive Sportage because I needed the ground clearance. I wrecked underside of my previous hatchback.

I was wrong, however. I needed round clearance and 4X4 so I swapped it for something more suitable.

Incidentally, the Sportage was described as an “Estate” on the V5.

OliveHenry · 06/10/2024 17:24

I consider my Saab 9 5 to be a large saloon car.

My partner's 2010 Peugeot 3008 is both wider and taller than it!

It comfortably seats 5 people and is no way cramped inside.

Still prefer mine though :-)

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/10/2024 17:26

DP is a mechanic. He says its classed as an suv but it's a pile of shit too and one of the worst cars on the road.

NPET · 06/10/2024 17:29

duvetstealer · 06/10/2024 08:24

It's bigger than you think, it's a foot longer than the ford puma and a meter longer than a Suzuki jimny

Gosh if you read the heading and then this post, you'll have a happy evening!

noodlercanoodler · 06/10/2024 17:43

Apparently my Discovery Sport is a compact SUV

I'm small, I feel like I'm driving a monster truck Grin

Passmetheaero · 06/10/2024 17:59

my current car needs replacing and I’d love an SUV. What makes and models do you all
like? I’ll not bother with a Peugeot given comments above 🤣

I've had to come back to this thread to announce I was wrong.

I was actually looking and thinking about a 308. Not a 3008.

Lovely car (Kia Sportage), but it's much smaller than that

Have you got the right model? 3008 is large? The 5008 is larger again.

I can’t believe we’ve had an entire thread based on this 🙄

Yeah this exactly.

Easily done and you’ve got the balls to come back and say it! At least you’re on the same page with him now 😄

I actually spend all day sorting cars into different types (apologies for being vague!) and a Sportage is one of the ones that annoys me regularly.

And 100%, if I needed a proper wagon for the countryside I’d want to be able to lock the diff. You’ll probably notice ads for ‘SUVs’ don’t show the car doing anything off road or tricky except driving through a shallow stream because it would be misleading otherwise.

I think the School Utility Vehicles definition upthread is brilliant. We have ours because when DC2 came along we needed to fit the big buggy and a suitcase or two in the boot, and there was zero chance I'd be opting to park an estate. I don't need or want it to go off-road. I'm guessing there's thousands of us with similar criteria.

If the Citroen C3 Aircross is an SUV (it is), then the Peugeot 3008 is also an SUV as it's bigger.

Yes I think most people want them for room and safety now, an SUV does look better than a minivan I think
