Housekeeping help - damp trainers?!

My son left his trainers in a carrier bag, soaking wet after PE for over a week and they were rancid when I found them.
I washed at 40° with Bio powder and Zoflora in the softener drawer, dried thoroughly and they still smelled so the process was repeated. Still didn’t work so sprayed with white vinegar until drenched, left overnight then followed same washing procedure as above. They still smell! They’re mostly fabric rather than a leather type. Can they be saved?!

Smells are created by bacteria. The only way to get rid of the smell is to kill the bacteria by soaking in antibacterial liquid like the Dettol laundry sanitizer, Sainsbury's also do one, or tablets like the Milton ones.

If the above doesn't work you might have to bite the bullet and get another pair.

Leaving outside in the sun is a good disinfectant. If you can leave outside in direct sunlight for a few days that will help.
