‘Cool’ brands for 12 yo

Gpea8181 · 03/10/2024 18:50

My daughter is turning 12. I’m not a cool Mum and she’s interested but not pushy for the latest things. A lot of her friends are on TikTok etc all the time so have ideas on what’s ‘cool’, she only really knows what they tell her. I’d love to surprise her with some clothes, skincare etc that she’ll enjoy but also fit with a bit of street cred (without being try hard!). Any suggestions?

What’s your DD’s preferences? Recommendations for trainers and hoodies aren’t going to relevant if she likes dresses.

Our niece just had her 12th birthday and is into White Fox hoodies.

Especially ones with puffy bubble writing on them. seem pretty overrated to me but there you go.

The other brand she likes is Brandy Melville.

Another one for white fox here. Very popular with kids of this age!

I've just looked at White Fox clothes and it looks very grown up for a 12 year old. Isn't 12 too young for TikTok?

Yes officially and I don’t let my daughter use it. Many do though so still ‘influences’ their opinion

Blooming heck I just looked at the dresses on their site! Those are absolutely NOT for children.

My niece was certainly only interested in the hoodies though. I think they may be a sort of sub-brand thing.

Tik Tok has specific accounts for those under 13 with extra controls and filters https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/tiktok-for-younger-users

I know! I was quite shocked. I was thinking surely children aren't wearing pvc playsuits?!

Fillyfrog · 03/10/2024 19:31

My daughter (11) likes Byoma, Bubble, Glow recipe for skincare. Sol de janeiro and the impulse perfume sprays.
Revolution, PLouise, elf and Nyx makeup.

Ridiculous really but all her friends are rye same 🙈

Hoolihan · 03/10/2024 19:38

Skincare/perfume - PLouise, Bubble, Glossier, Victoria Secret, Lush, Ariana Grande.

Clothes - Nike, Shein, White Fox, Primark!

Hoolihan · 03/10/2024 19:40

Nike Pro leggings/shorts specifically, and Nike AF1s.

To put it in context my niece is very quiet, doesn’t wear makeup or jewellery and isn’t into hairstyling or anything- she wears glasses and is a bit nerdy really. I just saw the hoodie as a present from her parents and she was delighted with it- huge, grey and baggy. I had no idea about the rest of the White Fox brand 😳

MiniSatchelContents · 03/10/2024 19:48

Isn't White Fox a bit passé now? Hollister and Urban Outfitters are popular with tweens and younger teens. Juicy Couture and Northface too.

Singleandproud · 03/10/2024 19:48

DD was always either jeans and a Qwertee t-shirt at 12 or charity shop Dark academia, waistcoats / tweed jackets sort of 1950s geography teacher.

She's a bit older now and likes things from Disturbia (£££ and great quality and customer services and their sales are great), she doesn't go for the very goth or suggestive looks but pinstripe trousers with suspenders/braces, normal shirt and collar brooch to jazz it up....but she doesn't care for following the crowds and it's a very specific look.

Your daughter sounds as cool as 😊

My dd is not trendy but she tries to blend in.

She lives in leggings and joggers, and has one pair of pale baggy jeans she adores. Hoodies and crop tops. Nike AF1 and also her beloved Converse.

She is very happy with inexpensive body sprays from Superdrug.
I’m getting her a Korean clay mask and some ELF lip balms for Xmas (together cost more than my own beauty budget for 6 months!)

My dd also loves things that are cute and soft - she has some extremely soft pjs with a panda print, and her oodie. You want to make sure your dd has some reputable sleepwear for sleepovers and school trips.

Maybe also consider “hardware” - a decent mirror in which to practice doing makeup; I got dd some bamboo storage jars for face pads and makeup brushes
(which she’s currently using for her Posca pens! 🤣) . It can make a nice gift, maybe with a little succulent plant to display together in her room/bathroom shelf.

She sounds like me daughter. I’m proud she’s not pushy for all the latest fads but at the same time don’t want her to feel totally out of touch. Love these suggestions. Thank you
