Flying from Dublin airport and ideally looking for somewhere within about 3 hours.

Two adults. Would like somewhere that’s easy to walk around, nice restaurants, bars, and sights.

Going for either three or four nights.

Venice is outstanding. Autumnal sunshine, great food and sites.

I'd go for any Italian, French or Spanish city that has direct flights.

Stockholm is a beautiful city. SAS fly there direct from Dublin, as do Ryanair.

I’m in Sweden and Denmark in December so no to Stockholm for now.

For those saying Venice, can you tell me what you love about it? I hear such mixed reviews.

Venice is like nowhere else, it’s that simple. Just completely unique and magical. Partly because the almost complete absence of cars, combined with the water, makes it sound different from any other city. Yes, it gets insanely busy, but that’s a good reason to go away from high season.

Ellerby83 · 01/10/2024 19:50

I was in Venice 2 weeks ago. Had never been before ,avoided it for some reason because I thought it would be hideously busy. I loved it. It is so beautiful. Loved the absence of cars as well, so many places are ruined by traffic.

When a PP said Madrid was cold what sort of temp are we talking. Google gives such a wide range, I'd be interested in loved experience

Dubrovnik, just been and it's stunningly beautiful, culture, architecture, history, beautiful coastline, sunny, GoT stuff if you're into that, loads of watersports and boat tours, little islands to visit.

peanutbuttertoasty · 01/10/2024 21:24

If you’ve never been to Venice then go there, 100%

Second this. I love Stockholm.

Nannyoggapple · 01/10/2024 23:24

Stockholm is so nice!

I visited there, and I thought

"Its like a higher world"

Everywhere there is a bit better and more developed than anywhere else in europe

SleepPrettyDarling · 01/10/2024 23:30

I’d go on Skyscanner, find a cheap flight to a secondary city, and book the nicest hotels and attractions in that city. You’ll always find gems of places to stay and see on a short break in a European city. I went to Hamburg for about €60 one October, did a walking tour, took a day trip to Lubeck in a hire car, did a harbour tour to the Operahaus, and ate really well. And shopped.

Unless you want sun?

I agree with Venice if you haven't been.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 02/10/2024 08:56

Florence - one of my favourite cities in the world.

All of the above!
Naples is great.
Marseillle/Avignon.
Ljubljana is my favourite place on the planet.

Oh Ljubjana is fabulous! Had the most wonderful solo holiday there.

Alicante in Spain - easy to get to - lots to do , great food , beaches , city , castle , shopping . Had avoided it for many years as associated. it with Benidorm - but it’s a beautiful city with so much to offer . Been there twice in last year and going back in February .
would also second Malaga - been there in December and January and lovely weather - in t shirts in the day - ago great sights shopping and food .
have a great time !

deeahgwitch · 02/10/2024 09:13

If you've not been to Venice, what are you waiting for @ColdExtremities !!!!

As I approached Venice by boat it was even more stunning than I had imagined.

Blueuggboots · 02/10/2024 09:18

Venice. Do an airbnb. It's an amazing city.

MarkWithaC · 02/10/2024 09:37

Venice is wonderful and, as pps say, unique. What put me off is that shopkeepers etc seemed to resent tourists (admittedly somewhat understandable; I know how swamped it is) and the absence of decent food apart from ice cream.

Everyone online says Benidorm is horrible.

I went last year for the first time.

I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought that Benidorm was lovely.

I'm going to go back again this year.

Nannyoggapple · 02/10/2024 09:40

Wouldn't you love to just go everywhere!!!

dragonbear · 02/10/2024 09:45

I went for a day - got the tram up the coast from Alicante - pleasantly surprised by lovely beaches but found less to do there than in the larger cities and felt it was more British than Spanish .

Whitenoise1 · 02/10/2024 09:45

Tallin. Estonia is gorgeous!

Yeah it's definitely more British than Spanish.

But sometimes that is good for a break.

I went to Spain recently.

I went to valencia first on my trip.

The buses were cancelled altogether because there was some big protest on.

I tried to get a taxi. The taxis wouldn't stop.

Everything was so difficult and hard to grt done there.

Then I went down to benidorm, (more touristy area) where everything is in English, and everything is in walking distance.

It is just easier. And sometimes I want "easy" for a break

mjf981 · 02/10/2024 10:00

Split. Briliant place. With a daytrip to Trogir.
