Flying from Dublin airport and ideally looking for somewhere within about 3 hours.

Two adults. Would like somewhere that’s easy to walk around, nice restaurants, bars, and sights.

Going for either three or four nights.

My parents rave about Porto and looks fabulous for a few days.

We’ve booked Palma for our February getaway (just had to google that yes, it’s a city 😳) Budapest is also on my list - amongst most of the others you’ve already been to!

I didn't like Porto at all, I have to say!

farmerboy · 01/10/2024 16:33

I'm in Seville at the moment and it's gorgeous. Lots to do and we've had day trips on the train to Cordoba and Cadiz.

Nannyoggapple · 01/10/2024 16:35

I didn't like Seville.

Cadiz was alright but it's very small. I wouldn't go back there either.

Nannyoggapple · 01/10/2024 16:36

The last place I went to that I really liked was

Zurich, Switzerland.

Retiredearly61 · 01/10/2024 16:43

Valencia or Cadiz, my two favourite Spanish cities

JaninaDuszejko · 01/10/2024 16:46

Malaga. Florence is lovely but the weather at the end of October is very variable, it went from 25C to 16C when we were there.

Also, the last week of October is half term in England, but not in Scotland. So check the school holidays in Ireland, you want to avoid the school holidays if you can to get cheaper flights.

Tartoufle · 01/10/2024 16:49

I was going to say Amsterdam as we went at the end of October and it was gorgeous.

But as you've been I'd suggest Lyon instead. Such a beautiful city! If you can fly to Geneva and take the train to Lyon even better as the scenery is gorgeous.

LegoHouse274 · 01/10/2024 16:50

Lyon

adorablecat · 01/10/2024 16:52

Berlin
Athens
Ljubljana
Reykjavik

Tartoufle · 01/10/2024 16:53

Ps don't pick Istanbul! It isn't a relaxing break or easy to walk around. It's massive.

I love it but it's a challenge in many respects.

octoberpumpkin · 01/10/2024 16:57

Belgrade is stunning in autumn

@Nannyoggapple can I ask why you didn’t like Porto

I had to think about that! I just remembered that i really didnt like it.

Now I think of why, it's because I had a really awful experience there.

It was a person that put me off Porto, when I shouldn't let a person put me off a place.

I had a bad hotel experience.

I arrived in Porto, all excited. I was doing Solo travel.

I had booked a hotel room on booking com.

I got there, it turned out to be an apartment. Owner was away and he was letting the rooms out.

He emailed me a self check- in code to get in at the front door and a code for the room.

I let myself into the bedroom.

I was changing, and stark naked. When this Portuguese woman burst in and shouted at me that she was going to call the police on me.

Apparently she was running the place, and the owner hadn't told her I was coming.

And she didn't bother to ring him to ask, when she saw me. Or even ask me!

She shouted and shouted at me. I said I had paid to stay there. AndI said sure I had the code To get in. How would i get in if i hadnt paid.

She said "people have shared those codes out to their friends in the past"

She shouted and shouted at me that she was going to call the police. She was nuts

. Eventually I managed to get through to the owner and he told her I'd paid to stay there.

But I was just really shaken, and it left me with really bad memories of Porto.

Also after that, I met a couple of other nasty people in other parts of Porto.

So it was the people really that put me off the place

Rome, Florence, Venice, Dubrovnik. I went to Dubrovnik in October and it was still nearly sunbathing weather.

hopeishere · 01/10/2024 18:12

Bilbao. We did it last year from Dublin at the same time. It was great. Still warm. Lots to see and do. Good food.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2024 18:38

Bruges was fabulous.
I want you to go back.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2024 18:39

🙈I want to go back.

You could spend a night in Brussels first.

KenAdams · 01/10/2024 18:42

Rome or Sicily

Cheepcheepcheep · 01/10/2024 18:45

I once had a long weekend between finishing an old job and starting a new one but little cash, so did a completely random trip to Vilnius in Lithuania. Loved it - it was such a find! So there if you’re not too fussed about hot weather.

Alternatively - Split, Barcelona or Florence. All for v different reasons!

iwfja · 01/10/2024 18:47

Graz
Florence
Assisi
Gyor (Hungary. You can get the train from Budapest)

Sunnnybunny72 · 01/10/2024 18:54

Seville is my favourite but I can see you've already been there.
I've done lots of where you've been to.
Rome was lovely in October. Also Valencia?
We're going to Dubrovnik in two weeks and Munich in December.
Athens is next on my list.

Autumnweddingguest · 01/10/2024 18:56

I'd go for somewhere that has loads of interesting indoor stuff so if the weather is poor, it doesn't matter:

Amsterdam
Barcelona
London
Budapest

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/10/2024 18:56

All of the above!
Naples is great.
Marseillle/Avignon.
Ljubljana is my favourite place on the planet.

Shopgirl1 · 01/10/2024 19:00

Stockholm is a beautiful city. SAS fly there direct from Dublin, as do Ryanair.
