Plastic melted in oven

BooseysMom · 30/09/2024 17:11

Help! I accidentally left a sports plastic bottle lid in the oven and then cooked dinner and ate it! We didn't even smell any fumes. It was only today when it started making a funny noise that I pulled out the wire rack and there was completely melted black plastic all over it! Really worried we absorbed the chemicals in the food now.

how on earth do you leave a sports bottle lid in the oven in the first place?

WeeOrcadian · 30/09/2024 17:39

I'm pretty sure you'll survive

My question would be how it got there in the first place

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/09/2024 17:41

My mum served a shepherds pie she had melted a spatula into. Didn't realise until the end, stringy plastic. We were all fine.

There's really not much you can do now except make sure you scrupulously clean off the residue and make sure you don't do it again.
So no point worrying about it.

someone in a town i once lived in stored their george forman grill in the oven. having forgotten it was in there they set the oven to self clean and took off for the morning.
the black smoke filled house from the plastic casing was fully torn down and they got a brand new home thanks to their insurance policy....

Foxxo · 30/09/2024 17:51

why would you put plastic in the oven to dry it? It'll dry if you leave it out on the side!

You were trying to dry a plastic bottle in the oven? Why??!!

unsync · 30/09/2024 18:51

It's probably a good idea to never get an Aga.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/09/2024 18:53

I once cooked a pizza with the plastic still on it. That was a sight when I opened the oven, melted plastic all over the place and a droopy sad pizza in the middle of it all.

Didn't eat the pizza (obviously) but on the other hand, haven't died of Contaminated Oven either.

SallyWD · 30/09/2024 19:09

Happened to me. For months afterwards whenever I tried to use the oven, there was the awful toxic smell of melting plastic. Made me feel ill! So I got a professional oven cleaner round and she spent an hour cleaning it. Made no difference!
In desperation, I decided I'd try and just burn it off. I opened the kitchen windows and back door and just blasted the oven for about an hour. It worked!! The plastic was gone.
I'm sure this approach isn't recommended but it was the only thing that got rid of the smell.

Oh glad I'm not the only one, I forgot to remove the plastic lid off my Pyrex dish with beef stew in it. I realised after about 10 mins, no smell, but the plastic lid welded itself onto my over glove 🧤. I fished the shrunken middle bit of the lid out after letting it cool for a few minutes, (it was in globules so wasn't properly mixed in with the stew) dh and I still very much alive and well 14 years later... I blame lack of sleep and mega baby brain!

PatsyPatsysaid · 30/09/2024 19:48

I once put a pizza incl styrofoam backing the oven. This was years ago - before they had cardboard backings. DH still likes to remind me.

I know, I know! It's cos we haven't got a dishwasher so nothing ever properly dries

I once knew someone at work who dried their coat in the microwave. It caught fire. We had to put a note on the microwave saying: "Please don't dry clothes in here". True story.

Blimey! We got most of the plastic off in the end but the wire rack is going to be a challenge. Might just get a new one. But tbh we need a new oven as one of the settings doesn't work now. It switches off automatically. But it will work on the other ones.
