“Tory leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch has said maternity pay has "gone too far" and the government needed to interfere less in people's lives”

Am I right in thinking she is saying we should give people less money on Mat leave? While im
no longer on mat leave I had to save up with the stat allowance in order to afford a baby. I put £1k into our joint account to cover all bills like mortgage, food, petrol etc. I can’t quite believe what I’m reading or have I gone mad?

Maternity pay has gone too far, says Kemi Badenoch www.bbc.com/news/articles/c781m9v4255o

This quote annoys me the most: She said: “We need to have more personal responsibility - there was a time when there wasn’t any maternity pay and people were having more babies."

Because in order to afford a house pay households now need two incomes, it’s now a luxury to be a SAHP.

There are at least 2 other threads on this that I've seen this afternoon.

She’s clarified what she said in a tweet, and shared the video interview - I’ve not watched it yet, but she’s pushed back on misrepresentation before.
