Who do you think are the stage and screen national treasures of the future?

Thinking about Maggie Smith and her generation of actors got me thinking, specifically, that, although we can always enjoy her screen performances, it is a shame not to have seen her on stage. So, as someone who would like to go to the theatre more, who do you think are the next generation (so, say people aged between 50 and 65) of stage and screen national treasures? I am wondering very specifically about actors who mix both stage and screen, as Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, etc did/do.

I sometimes wonder if David Tennant might one day fill that niche of national treasure as he obviously has done a lot of screen work and I have seen him on stage (and can confirm his performance was excellent and very charismatic). I have also, many years ago, seen Derek Jacobi a few times and again was blown away. But who else do you think I should look out for? Who else will one day have their stage performances mentioned as something special you were privileged to have seen?

Jodie Comer. If you've seen her in Prima Facie I think you'll see what I mean.

Frances Barber

Sheridan Smith will probably get Dame ahead of her name in her 50’s or so.

I came to say Jodie Comer, she is incredible

Sarah Lancashire will also get to visit His Maj for a gong.

TeenToTwenties · 29/09/2024 19:01

Olivia Coleman
Kevin Whatley perhaps

PermanentTemporary · 29/09/2024 19:01

Simon Russell Beale - though he's a treasure now i guess. I feel lucky that I have seen him live. Absolutely extraordinary actor.

Mark Rylance of course.

Anna Maxwell Martin, I love her.

Michael Sheen. Nye is still on at the National Theatre at times. Not the best thing he's ever been in but it's pretty good.

David Tennant at his best is really good I agree.

Gemma Whelan. I'm sad I missed the Bronte thing.

I find David Tennant very irritating in everything he's in. It's too much about him.
I agree about Gemma Whelan though, because she really gets into a part, she hides herself.
Also Andrea Risborough.

MagdaLenor · 29/09/2024 19:17

Lesley Sharp
Ron Cook

I don’t know Gemma Whelan, but the others, yes. Simon Russell Beale is a god.

Alex Jennings? Janet McTeer? Lindsay Duncan?

I don’t think Andrew Scott can be a national treasure as such,, or Fiona Shaw.

VeraYin · 29/09/2024 19:22

Jolie Comer

Oo some good names here. Yes, Olivia Colman is an obvious but I didn't know she did much theatre work. And yes, Andrew Scott, Mark Rylance and Michael Sheen are obvious too. I thought of another I have already seen on stage - Roger Allam.

Added to those mentioned...

Helen mirren?
Zoe Wanamaker

I think a few comedians fit the bill
Joanna Lumley

Dawn French

I think we need to set some national treasure criteria!

MagdaLenor · 29/09/2024 19:23

Claire Foy.
Just brilliant as Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall. Also the young QEII.

SpyOfHut6 · 29/09/2024 19:24

Michael Sheen handed back his OBE didn't he?

We had this conversation earlier today while watching a HP film, I couldn't remember exactly how many of the actors had gongs (Alan Rickman also turned down a honour).

Anyway, I was saying that I can't imagine any of the younger actors in it going onto receive honours in the way the old guard in the film had them.
