Who do you think are the stage and screen national treasures of the future?

Thinking about Maggie Smith and her generation of actors got me thinking, specifically, that, although we can always enjoy her screen performances, it is a shame not to have seen her on stage. So, as someone who would like to go to the theatre more, who do you think are the next generation (so, say people aged between 50 and 65) of stage and screen national treasures? I am wondering very specifically about actors who mix both stage and screen, as Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, etc did/do.

I sometimes wonder if David Tennant might one day fill that niche of national treasure as he obviously has done a lot of screen work and I have seen him on stage (and can confirm his performance was excellent and very charismatic). I have also, many years ago, seen Derek Jacobi a few times and again was blown away. But who else do you think I should look out for? Who else will one day have their stage performances mentioned as something special you were privileged to have seen?

Andrew Scott isn't British!

Helen Mirren is already a Dame. Agree with Claire Foy and Sarah Lancashire.

It's a shame Haydn Gwynne passed away - I've loved her in everything she's done.

Jessie Buckley (a dark horse perhaps).

Also not British!

And yes, are we talking about ‘Who will accept an OBE or whatever nonsense?’ Because that’s a very different question to ‘Who is a widely beloved British actor?’

Screamingabdabz · 29/09/2024 19:32

I think Jodie Comer has a few more years to go yet…(but I do think she’s good).

For me Olivia Coleman, Toby Jones, Jason Watkins, Rosie Cavalerio, Brenda Blethyn,
Joel Fry, Tom Hollander, Rebecca Front, Joanna Scanlon, David Haig, Naomi Harris, Martin Freeman, Stephen Graham.

(Assuming some of these aren’t already national treasures!)

Citygirlrurallife · 29/09/2024 19:32

She’s a bit young now but I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Carey Mulligan. I saw her in The Seagull when she was about 22 and she was incredible

PermanentTemporary · 29/09/2024 19:32

Dammit. I have no explanation except unconscious racism (no I don't think that's an excuse) for missing Sophie Okonedo and David Oleyowo from that list. Both exceptional.

Ben Wishaw

Indeed. Seen him on stage too. He was unbelievably good. So unlike any other character I had ever seen him play.

I don't quite follow the argument about honours. That isn't a prerequisite of national treasure status imo. To me, a national treasures is someone who features heavily in the cultural life of our nation, someone who is known more widely than just by the diehard fans who attend every cultural event going. Someone you miss when they die. And obviously, someone who manages to avoid criminal charges for deviant behaviour! 😉

Oo some good names here. Yes, Olivia Colman is an obvious but I didn't know she did much theatre work. And yes, Andrew Scott, Mark Rylance and Michael Sheen are obvious too. I thought of another I have already seen on stage - Roger Allam.

Oh yes, I agree with Roger Allam, too. I saw him in that amazing 1986 season at the RSC where he played the Duke in Measure for Measure and Sir Toby Belch in TN. It was the year that cemented my absolute love of Shakespeare, and he was an inspiration even then.

Andrew Scott isn't British!

But he lives here, and is a massive star of the London stage and British tv and film. He doesn’t do most of his work elsewhere in the world. So he counts for me.
