Who do you think are the stage and screen national treasures of the future?

Thinking about Maggie Smith and her generation of actors got me thinking, specifically, that, although we can always enjoy her screen performances, it is a shame not to have seen her on stage. So, as someone who would like to go to the theatre more, who do you think are the next generation (so, say people aged between 50 and 65) of stage and screen national treasures? I am wondering very specifically about actors who mix both stage and screen, as Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, etc did/do.

I sometimes wonder if David Tennant might one day fill that niche of national treasure as he obviously has done a lot of screen work and I have seen him on stage (and can confirm his performance was excellent and very charismatic). I have also, many years ago, seen Derek Jacobi a few times and again was blown away. But who else do you think I should look out for? Who else will one day have their stage performances mentioned as something special you were privileged to have seen?

Also not British!

And yes, are we talking about ‘Who will accept an OBE or whatever nonsense?’ Because that’s a very different question to ‘Who is a widely beloved British actor?’

Sorry, didn't realise. Thought she was Scottish for some reason (perhaps due to Wild Rose?).

Harriet Walter and Stephanie cole both incredible but prob too old and not big enough.

Daniel Craig
Gina McKee (mesmerising on stage)

kristin Scott Thomas
I would also say Nicola Walker and sunetra Sarker but I’m not sure if they’ve done stage. See also Katherine Kelly and Siobhan Finneran.

Adele Akhtar (he’s been prolific and brilliant over the past few years, although I needed to Google him to find out his name).

DaveWatts · 29/09/2024 19:56

Not sure if anyone's mentioned Dominic West yet? But he is amazing on stage as well as tv/film

user1471553350 · 29/09/2024 19:58

Alison Steadman !

CurlewKate · 29/09/2024 19:58

Andrew Scott

Not David Tennant-he was excellent as Dr Who because it didn't matter that he was still David Tennant. Ditto Broadchurch. It does matter in Hamlet

CurlewKate · 29/09/2024 19:59

Olivia Coleman

CitrusPocket · 29/09/2024 19:59

I would have said Helen McCrory Sad

Cynic17 · 29/09/2024 20:00

Mark Rylance
Kenneth Branagh
David Tennant
Benedict Cumberbatch
Ben Whishaw
Tamsin Greig
Imelda Staunton
Tom Hiddleston
Eddie Redmayne

All absolutely excellent on stage, as I can vouch.

PerkingFaintly · 29/09/2024 20:12

Ooh, you got in just before I did, @ShowOfHands, with James McAvoy.

Plus many already mentioned, of course.

Also Jamie Bell.

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 29/09/2024 20:13

Suranne Jones is superb.

I think Florence Pugh will continue to be even more incredible.

Lesley Manville has control and ability to express immense emotions with the smallest of expressions.

Yes yes, watched her in the film Hampstead recently and she's just sooo good at that.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 29/09/2024 20:20

Carey Mulligan.

BakeOffRewatch · 29/09/2024 20:35

Gemma Arterton

Agree with Jodie Comer, Anna Chancellor. Not so sure about David Tennant and Sheridan Smith but that’s only because I don’t watch their stuff as much now and am only familiar with them from 2005 Casanova and Dr Who and 2001 Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Anyone out of the Four Weddings and a Funeral Richard Curtis era. So Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, John Hannah, Hugh Bonneville, Emma Chambers (Vicar of Dibley).

Mark Gatiss, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Andrew Scott.

Probably the generation after, but the Netflix crowd of Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education - could follow in Gillian Anderson’s stage footsteps), Simone Ashley, Ncuti Gatwa, Lucien Laviscount. I think Netflix opens the doors for them, cements they’re an audience pleaser and also gives them enough cash to follow the work they want.

BakeOffRewatch · 29/09/2024 20:39

I think anyone who does a voice for a Julia Donaldson BBC adaptation and actors who appear in Taskmaster are a good indicator too! So the actors from Ghosts, Charlotte Richie, Katy Wix, Nina Sosanya, Hugh Skinner, Lenny Henry,

DragonInAmber · 29/09/2024 20:43

Laura Donnelly, saw her in The Ferryman and Hills of California on stage ( she is Jez Butterworths partner).

She was fantastic, has been in a few TV series but mainly theatre.

LadyQuackBeth · 29/09/2024 20:47

Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Sean Bean
