Boy / girl friends going hosteling?

DS is 17 soon. He and one of his best friends have hatched a plan to go for a short trip to the UK (we are British but live outside the UK). They are looking at a combination of staying with family when they can, and staying in hostels on some nights.

His friend is female, he’s male. They aren’t a couple (they’ve been friends since they were tiny), just really good friends.

It’s a long time since I did any hosteling. What would be the best way for them to organise this? Each of them stay in separate male / female dorms? Or mixed ones so that they can be together? Anyone got experience of mixed sex groups going off together at this age?

It will depend on what they prefer to do, I guess.
They can either book 1 female & 1 male dorm bed, or book a private room together.

I’ve just stayed in a hostel with a (very good) male friend and we share a private room with 2 bunk beds. We prefer that over separate dorms but it’ll come down to their preference/ how comfortable they are with each other.
