Kemi Badenoch: Maternity pay is “excessive” and people should exercise “more personal responsibility”

MidnightPatrol · 29/09/2024 13:15

Tory leadership contender Kemi Badenoch interviewed today has said that, “Maternity pay is “excessive” and people should exercise “more personal responsibility”

When it was put to her that the amount of maternity pay was important for people who could not otherwise afford to have a baby, Ms Badenoch said: “We need to have more personal responsibility. There was a time when there wasn’t any maternity pay and people were having more babies.”

An interesting position to take as part of her campaign for the Tory leadership position: less maternity pay and support for new parents.

But she will at least hold Labour to account on women’s rights and child safeguarding in terms of them being utterly trashed by gender identity ideology.

Oh, okay then, if you think so.

I think she would spend day one having to fend off the people in the Tory party who are even loopier than her. She won't have any time for nonsense like holding the government to account.

The long slow disintegration of the Tory party will continue until all that's left is a squeak. The well deserved prize for the party that didn't sip, but drained the poison chalice of Brexit.

Has someone posted her clarification from X:

”Of course maternity pay isn’t excessive…no mother of 3 kids thinks that.

But we must talk about the burden of excessive business regulation otherwise we might as well be the Labour Party.

My campaign is different from others because tell hard truths. It is how we will renew our party, our thinking and our politics.”

I hope she becomes the next Tory leader as she at least knows what a woman is and will protect children from genderwoo.

Have you actually looked at her voting record on women's issues? Specifically abortion and healthcare?

If you support her, you're not a feminist of any kind. You're just anti trans.

Lupeypoon · 29/09/2024 13:59

This woman is a hard right fruitloop and yet plenty on MN blow smoke up her arse because she agrees with them on the trans issue 🙄

And I say that as a GC feminist.

This.

In what way will she hold labour to account over women's rights?

What has she ever done for women?

I think I'll be waiting a long long time for an answer.

Idk Starmer is doing a pretty good job at puncturing the Labour sell

Depends on getting growth but if he can’t 4.5 years is a long time

She has stood up for women’s rights because she has stood up for protecting the meaning of the word woman.

If men can be women, we don’t have women’s rights.

You seem to have told on yourself a bit there, you seem to be saying women’s rights are anti trans?

But a lot of the tax being collected to pay for maternity leave will be coming from high earning women who've managed to stay in the work force after having children due to the fact they got maternity leave.

Don't start getting all reasonable on us 😂😂

It is very worrying she is taking this stance.

She was once seen as an advocate for woman 🤔

Buffypaws · 29/09/2024 14:23

I am quite surprised by that.
She’s trying to get rid of immigration so the already low birth rate needs improving.

Edited

Yes but she thinks by removing SMP we'll have a baby boom.

I'm still searching under the sofa for her logic 😉

Dreadful woman, and she's my MP. She lost her 27,000 vote majority in the July election and got in with just about 3,000.

She's very far right and I've always been astounded at how much support she has had on here up to now.

Hopefully this latest comment on maternity pay will ensure that people start to see her as the far right arsehole that she actually is

I feel for you.

Almost.....

Beekeepingmum · 29/09/2024 18:34

So she knows what a women is but also know where a women's place is? Not in the workplace?

ichundich · 29/09/2024 18:43

She also said that "not all cultures are equally valid" re. immigration. If she wins the leadership race, I have no hope for this country.

Tbf I can see why

@EasternStandard I'm sure you’ll give the lovely Kemi benefit of the doubt, like you’ve done with the Labour government. Oh wait …

I think her mask has slipped now that she's using dog whistle politics to appeal to Reform voters and criticising maternity pay. What kind of feminist criticises maternity pay?

One who thinks only rich women like her should be allowed to have children?

Simonjt · 29/09/2024 17:56

Anyone who says “i say it like is” “I tell hard truths” is usually a prick with very little emotional intelligence or self awareness.

As one of her constituents, I think that about sums Kemi Badenoch up. Very accurately. She's just dreadful.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/09/2024 19:29

Odious person. No idea why anyone would put their trust in her.

Where by "clarification" you mean "outright contradiction"?

She can swivel 180º pretty quickly, I'll give her that.

MidnightPatrol · 29/09/2024 14:17

@Walkinginthesand yes… I suppose it’s worth remembering that she is trying to appeal to Conservative Party members, those who voted Liz Truss in.

She's Truss #2
I think the membership will vote her in if she ends up in the last few they get to vote on.
However the tory politicians may decide she's a bloody liability after the Truss debacle and knock her out of the running if they do want to win the next election.

Grandmasswagbag · 29/09/2024 19:37

bulb34 · 29/09/2024 18:13

This.

Second this. It's disgusting actually. She's a very very dangerous person.

PerkingFaintly · 29/09/2024 19:40

Also, "protect children from genderwoo" ?

What, like she did when she was in power?

Or is this another interesting meaning, where "protect" = "preside over absolute shitshow"?
