Boring one - how good is a professional carpet cleaning?

DD has recently left for first year at uni and I'm now tackling a big room clean (usually I leave it all to her as she's old enough- I haven't been in to clean the room in a year or so).

Cream carpet is pretty stained in places. Not sure what. Maybe the odd spilled drink and random bits of make up. I've hand-scrubbed the carpet with Vanish, used one of those metal carpet scraper things too. But most stains still there.

I've never had a professional carpet clean. Will it bring the carpet up like new? Or will it not be able to tackle stains and it'll just freshen it up a bit? I'm thinking it's not salvageable and I'll just have to rip it up and get a new one, but without knowing how effective a carpet clean is I'm unsure.

Thanks very much .

Following because my stair carpet looks terrible.

We had our cream living room carpet cleaned earlier this year as we're not ready to replace it yet. There's only one stain that didn't come out but was vastly improved. I'd definitely give it a go before deciding to replace the carpet.

I’ve always been impressed/horrified with how much they get out.

We do ours once a year. It always horrifies me how much mucky brown water comes out. Definitely worth it! Very occasionally a stain doesn't fully come out but it reduces significantly.

A GOOD carpet cleaner will make a huge difference.

Unfortunately there are a lot of cowboys around.

if you book one, tell them what you have used on the stains already because of chemical reactions, you can end up with orange & green stains otherwise.

Thank you very much, everyone. It seems like all hope isn't lost just yet.
