Aibu to want to replace this kitchen now

Hi, DH and I have just moved into our new house- it’s somewhere we plan to stay until the kids have flown the nest, lovely house but a bit dated.

The kitchen is solid and functional but I don’t like it. It must be 20 years old. To replace it would mean that we would have to borrow more which dh is dead set against doing. He thinks that we just live with it for a few years.

i’ve attached a couple of pics. Not showing the whole room in case someone identifies me!!

could you live with this?

Change the handles and the worktops? Much cheaper and easier than a whole refit?

MidnightPatrol · 27/09/2024 21:20

Yes I could live with not liking the aesthetics of my kitchen.

It looks in good condition.

mynameiscalypso · 27/09/2024 21:20

Could you paint the doors if they bother you? It might freshen it up. I have similar feelings towards our kitchen, not helped by the fact that our previous kitchen was one that we designed, but it's not worth the cost or hassle of putting a new one in at the moment.

It’s just so ugly

Paint it

Overthebow · 27/09/2024 21:22

It looks fine, not worth getting into more debt for. Paint it if you’d prefer a different colour.

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/09/2024 21:23

New handles, new veg cover and some colour on the walls and it would instantly and cheaply look very different.

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/09/2024 21:23

Veg cover should say Vent cover

Viperoil24 · 27/09/2024 21:24

@Cantinao
What are you wanting instead?
Are there other priorities like rewire etc
Do you have the money/budget to do what you want ( as in full redo or just smarten up what's there)

JoJothegerbil · 27/09/2024 21:25

Paint it and replace the handles.

BurbageBrook · 27/09/2024 21:25

Paint it and change the cupboard handles. Easy! Not worth getting into more debt for a new kitchen.

Another vote for painting the doors etc and changing the work surfaces. I did this in a previous house and it made a massive improvement.

NoraLuka · 27/09/2024 21:26

Can’t see anything wrong with it, it’s just a normal kitchen. Maybe paint it if you don’t like the colour?

coronafiona · 27/09/2024 21:26

I've wanted a new kitchen for 17 years. So jealous! Do it!!

Pigeonqueen · 27/09/2024 21:27

It’s not that bad at all. I mean yes if you have the money spare and fancy an update then great but there’s no way I’d get into debt to replace that.

This.

We lived with the dated kitchen when we moved to our current house, for 8 years. I couldn't stand the kitchen. But it did the job and tolerated it whilst the DC were tiny.

No point putting yourself into debt.

Thfrog · 27/09/2024 21:30

It's fine

ZiggyZowie · 27/09/2024 21:30

I'd be delighted with that kitchen !!

No need to change it at all.

If you don't like it you could add some clip on spotlights, put up some framed pics, some open shelving in any gaps.

LuluBlakey1 · 27/09/2024 21:31

Are there enough floor units to remove the wall units? Replace the work surfaces and handles, nice tiles, couple of shelves, paint job. Bob's your uncle for 5 -10 years.

Why remove wall units? Can’t have enough cupboards, plus with open shelves, everything gets dusty.

Kendodd · 27/09/2024 21:33

Yes I could live with it absolutely no problem. I assume the doors aren't falling off or anything?

outforawalkbiatch · 27/09/2024 21:34

Mine is nearly 20 years old, I replaced the handles as they were similar to yours and it looks better

Dark work top wouldn’t suit me, so I know what you mean
