I can't think of all the wonderful things I've seen with Dame Maggie. I know a life well lived, and age comes to us all, but what a wonderful woman. Any favourites?

If any thread should have had a trigger warning it was this.

I know - would be lovely to hide thread titles under a 'content warning - death of lovely actress/actor/writer etc' tab.

I've recently watched My House in Umbria.

Just heard that she'd passed away on the news on the way home. Very sad. She's had an amazing career. Well done, Maggie!

AutumnFroglets · 27/09/2024 14:58

I'm confused. Why would you need a trigger warning when there is RIP in the title?

Silviasilvertoes · 27/09/2024 14:59

Oh no! One of my favourite women. RIP Dame Maggie.

Anisty · 27/09/2024 15:02

Miss Jean Brodie. That's the role I most know her for.

Normallynumb · 27/09/2024 15:05

She was excellent in everything I've ever seen.
Such a wonderful talent and a life well lived

Being flippant really, but meaning it was such a shock to read when scanning threads for light entertainment.

She has had an amazing life, and a good age (although the closer I get the less I believe this) but still sad.

One of the most fabulous and talented actresses of recent times. Her brilliance bought joy to millions across generations.
RIP Dame Maggie 💔

My first time in London on a sixth form trip in the 90s. First time to the theatre too - we went to see The Importance of Being Earnest. The whole play was awesome but Lady Bracknell (Maggie Smith) absolutely stole the show.

Genuinely sad to hear this. Dd and I LOVE Downton, and I've liked her in everything she has ever done really. A great actress and she seemed a lovely woman.

Judging Downton Abbey GIF

loved her most in Downton

I'm so sad about this

thisoldcity · 27/09/2024 15:42

A friend and I saw her on stage a couple of years ago in a one woman play about being a secretary to a famous Nazi. Quite an unusual play but she held the audience totally throughout and both my friend and I were convinced she looked straight at us for much of it, with that direct piercing haze of hers. So sorry she's gone.

I'm going to try and find My House in Umbria - a couple of hours I haven't heard of which is lovely (and sad). What a brilliant woman.

I bet that was wonderful. I don't want to tempt fate but I've been lucky enough to see another older actress several times and she's amazing.

Loved her as Dowager Grantham in Downton, was only watching it yesterday and started thinking about her and wondering how old she was, got a bit of a shock when i opened facebook earlier and seen she had passed away 💔

Papyrophile · 27/09/2024 16:34

Loved her acting in almost everything I ever saw. Quartet in Autumn and the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as well as all the obvious hits.

PuppyMonkey · 27/09/2024 16:35

I love her as Miss Bartlett in Room with a View, the scene where she’s wittering about not having the correct change for something? I can’t remember exactly but it is joyous!

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 27/09/2024 16:40

I loved her in everything I've seen her in. I'm sorry I never got to see her live.

an absolute GOAT whose talents will be missed, but her memory will live on for a very very very long time

much love to her family & friends at this heart breaking 💔 time.

Charlotte Bartlett in A Room with a View ❤️

Definitely! The casting in the whole film was perfect but Dame Maggie as Cousin Charlotte was just just sublime

Overtheatlantic · 27/09/2024 16:47

Evil Under the Sun. She was in her prime, along with Diana Rigg.

Wands up!

I was so sad to hear the news, RIP Dame Maggie Smith.
@LookItsMeAgain your post really brought a tear to my eye 🪄 😢

What a wonderful actress, with lots of amazing roles 💐

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 27/09/2024 16:51

Evil Under the Sun. The best film version of any Agatha Christie story ever made,

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 27/09/2024 16:53

Hear, hear, OP. I rarely tear up over an actor’s death, but for Dame Maggie, it’s a high honour to shed a tear for her. I was so sad to read about her passing.

daisychain01 · 27/09/2024 16:57

She was a quality act ❤️
