Vegetarian restaurants that have come and gone

I saw the thread asking about restaurants in London and started thinking about veggie restaurants in London from the 70s onwards when I first became vegetarian. These sprang to mind immediately
Manna in Erskine Road
Raw Deal off Baker Street
Food for Thought Neal St
Some more will come to me, but I'd really appreciate any that you can recall. Most of the old ones have closed or turned into vegan pretend meat places.

X post with @letiton . That'll teach me!

I liked the solidity of homity pie. You knew you've eaten when you'd had a slice of that.

There's one in Exeter (Herbies) I was taken to 45 years ago that is still there now. My then boyfriend got luncheon vouchers from his workplace so took me there, and I remember having a very 'worthy' wholemeal veggie pizza. It's still going but I imagine it has probably updated itself several times since then.

I was in there very recently. Absolutely delicious, and not a worthy item on the menu. It's still vegetarian rather than vegan, and the vegan options are recognisable food. Omnivorous DH felt spoilt for choice. Not a place for a budget student lunch, though.

First Out was a gay hangout back in the day, there was a bar down some steep steps and a vegetarian cafe on the ground floor. Sadly closed in 2011

Mildred’s makes me cross now with its aggressive veganity.

It's frustrating as it's possible to do both and my concern is a lot of the plant based stuff is highly processed

Hansa's in Leeds closed in recent years

Oh no Sad

I visited Hansa's once years ago it was so good!

Sherwil16 · 30/09/2024 06:01

I'm going to Rasa ( first time in ages) this week. Hoping it's still the same magnicent, crowded place to go for unusual veggie food. I always loved the beetroot dihes. Will report back.

Oh no Sad

It was for a good reason - she retired! But it is a loss for the rest of us.

@TealReal was it on one of the side roads connecting Upper st and Essex Rd (Gaskin or Cross St).....was it an old Georgian/Victorian shopfront with a couple of steps up to the door on the LHS? V small and narrow inside. Loved Angel in the the 80's.

@Glowey Yes that sounds right. It was definitely a side road. Can you remember the name of it?

Glowey · 02/10/2024 10:54

I cant unfortunately @TealReal

Oh Rasa never changes - it has always felt slightly shabby, but in the past three decades it has outlived a lot of smart pristine concepty places.

Wholemeal cafe in Streatham.

That’s still there and open.

Sherwil16 · 02/10/2024 23:11

Absolutely right. I've just been to Rasa and am delighted to say it hasn't changed a bit. The beetroot curry was delicious, which was the dish I had in mind from years ago. There was a nod to vegans, in that they were pointed to the vegan dishes on the menu, but the good news is they were always on the menu. Rasa was full and lively with great service, just as I'd remembered. I'll be back.
