Wellies at school (reception)?

Newbie school mum question - my first child has just started reception and we walk to school (only 5 minutes). Today it's raining cats and dogs. I've sent them in wearing zip up ankle boots but seen other kids wearing wellies which definitely would have been better for the walk to school. (There's no uniform in reception by the way). However I wasn't sure if wellies were a good idea as my child would have to wear them all day inside the classroom? Sorry if it's a daft question but is it ok for a reception child to wear wellies all day at school?

Put a pair of soft plimsolls in their bag to change. Our nursery asked we put some slippers or other comfortable shoes to change into as wellies or wet normal shoes would be uncomfortable all day.

Mine take their wellies off at the door and swap to regular shoes. Depending on the teacher, some ask me to take the wellies back home, and some will keep them in the classroom.

Mine swap any outdoor shoes for indoor shoes so only has her wellies on at break time and lunch time. We find wellies so much easier than boots with a zip etc.

Mine swap to shoes in the classroom too- I sent them in with plastic bags so they can keep the wellies on their pegs all day

Err, not sure why my first post has been hidden!! It was a similar suggestion to @Caferouge !! Our nursery asked for spare shoes or slippers to change into from wet weather shoes.

Happii · 27/09/2024 08:51

No, they're not suitable to be worn in the classroom all day. You could ask if there's space for them to be stored there though, or just simply swap them at drop off and carry them back later.

We put school school shoes in a bag. When she gets to school takes the shoes out in the cloak room, puts her wellies in the bag and puts the bag on her coat peg, so then she just wears her school shoes for the day and her wellies are there ready if needed again at pick up.

Yup, wellies in and swapped at the door.

Ok that's helpful, thank you!

Ours wear plimsoles, or slippers, trainers etc as indoor shoes and get changed when they arrive. The whole school does. We do live in a rural area though and it’s a small school. This doesn’t seem to be common, but I much prefer it as my kids don’t have “school shoes” they just wear whatever shoes are appropriate that morning

Lovelysummerdays · 27/09/2024 09:06

We change to indoor shoes too. All children have a cubby to store shoes/wellies underneath their peg. I thought this was pretty universal. We don’t do school shoes either they wear trainers/ wellies or snow boots depending on the weather. Indoor shoes are trainers and double up for doing pe in the hall.

I used to buy a boot bag (football boot type) and put the wellies and splash suit in there, it could then be hung on her peg.

@Alicana did you mention the P word footwear commonly worn for PE? Depending how you spell it posts are automatically hidden as there is a P word troll.

@Singleandproud

Yes I did!! Omg, how weird, some people have too much time on their hands, what a strange thing to troll about!!
