While at an activity for my daughters the leaders and parents (mainly men) were saying how all the plumbers they know are crazy.

I don't know how one profession can do this or whether they are unstable to start with but the group of about 12 all agreed.

They all had stories about them cheating, asking out clients, drinking, falling asleep in the vans, walking out in jobs, adding £100s onto parts, talking money and walking off.

It all sounds a bit ott but how strange that all of those people had the same experiences.

Non mentioned being related to a plumber though.

My husband's cousin is a plumber and he's absolutely lovely, always has been - I've known him since he was a teenager before he started the career. He's done some work for us in our house twice.

I know a plumber, as far as I'm aware he doesn't do any of those things. I can't imagine every single one is the same as the ones you've heard about, no one is going to tell stories about someone who just gets on with their job

I know a plumber, late 20's and he's the kindest workman I've ever come across. On the ball, genuine, turns up on time, family man with a new baby, genuine nice guy.

Def nothing like your friends portrayed.

I have just had some plumbing and heating work done. It was a lot of work. The plumbers were lovely and did a brilliant job.

dixkybow · 27/09/2024 08:03

You know female plumbers exist?

Lamelie · 27/09/2024 08:03

Not my experience. Ditto painters, electricians, general labourers and gardeners. Scaffolders and carpet fitters though! 😳

foxandbee · 27/09/2024 08:04

If you all live in the same area, maybe it is the same plumber they are talking about! BTW no decent plumber will ask for money upfront. Payment when the job is done is the way to go.

foxandbee · 27/09/2024 08:07

Agree that scaffolders are a law into themselves!

BrainLife · 27/09/2024 08:09

My plumber is lovely. Graciously accepts cups of tea, then proceeds to tell me all about what his kids have been up to and how wonderful his wife is. Seems very normal and feel quite conformable on my own in the house with him.

Yes could be the same few.

Obviously I don't know what goes on when they're not here, but the team of plumbers we use are great. Overall chap is a family man and I know does the school run. He's been out twice himself (once on a Friday night as no extra cost for late call out), twice he's asked a member of his team. None have been drunk, they've turned up when they said they would (even been early on one occasion), charged what I would expect and on the two occasions we've needed taps replacing have shown us what's available and cost before going out to purchase.

Our plumber is a friend of a friend and is the most sensible and meticulous person I've ever met. Lovely man, very trustworthy but not a crazy bone in his body!

CurlsandCurves · 27/09/2024 08:32

My husband and son are both plumbers.

I don’t recognise any of the behaviors you have described in them!

IntheVicinity · 27/09/2024 08:33

An old school friend of mine (a woman) retrained as a plumber when she was made redundant, and is exactly the kind of calm, sensible, unflappable type you’d want to show up when there’s water mysteriously gushing out of a wall. And our plumber is one of the nicest, most Zen individuals I’ve ever met.

lololulu · 27/09/2024 08:36

See it's even more crazy now after reading this. It must be the same plumber 😂😂

It’s the scaffolders that are usually know for being “a different breed” 😂

ByMerryKoala · 27/09/2024 08:38

I know two plumbers. Sensible guys who prioritise their families and are sensible with their money and live quiet lives. You know, like just about everybody else.

BeerForMyHorses · 27/09/2024 10:00

Plumbers seem to be fine. As do electricians, kitchen fitters, painters.

Brickies and scaffolders are another story !
