Why does my washing machine lie?

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 10:22

When I start a cycle on my washing machine it says how long it will take to complete. For my most used cycle, that’s 1hr 11mins. Started a cycle at 8.45 this morning and it’s just finished, 1hr and 30 mins later.

also it counts down as it’s running, sometimes I’ll set it off, go off and do something else, come back 10 minutes later and the timer is showing longer than when it started!

I think it might be possessed.

Mine lies too! I don't know why. Maybe it's just trying to be optimistic?

Floralnomad · 25/09/2024 10:30

It weighs what you’ve put in and the time adjusts because of that . I have a 59 minute cycle on my machine but that is for 4kg of washing so if I go over 4kg ( it’s a 9kg machine) it takes longer than 59 minutes .

Autumn1990 · 25/09/2024 10:31

My mothers does. It tells you there’s 3 minutes left and then next time you look there’s 10 minutes to go. We’ve got the same make of washer but mine doesn’t lie.

Oganesson118 · 25/09/2024 10:32

Ours lies too. It will often tell me there’s 1 minute left and it’s the longest minute I’ve ever known.

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 10:41

Mine is a Bosch. Wonder if they are particularly bad for telling fibs.

Mine will start a wash (after turning about, presumably to assess the weight) and tell me it will take 1hr 15. I come back about that time and it's still turning away saying there's 2 hours left. Absolute gaslighting bastard.

TrtseHkpr · 25/09/2024 10:44

I have a Bosch and it lies too!

forevernumb · 25/09/2024 10:48

Mine is a Bosch and does this too. Will say 3 mins and won't move for ages. Is it something to do with sensors?

NewGreenDuck · 25/09/2024 10:49

My tumble dryer is currently doing this. I'm waiting for it to finish drying some sheets. It's been 15 minutes for half an hour now. I'm thinking of giving it a jolly good telling off.

Oh really? I thought I just had a tardy machine!

Swissrollover · 25/09/2024 10:54

The sensors will tell it that the clothes are dirtier or heavier than expected, so extra washing, rinsing or spinning might be needed. Sometimes it reduces time too. Mines a Samsung.

FluDog · 25/09/2024 10:55

We had a Bosch and it was never accurate. Current one is a Hisense that will work out the time at the beginning but the Bosch would add time on at the end.

I did wonder if part of it was down to the pump or drainage as I'd often find hair clips in there causing blockages. But before it gave up it would extend some washes for hours with a lot of the time spent sat doing nothing.

ManhattanPopcorn · 25/09/2024 10:57

You're overloading the machine.

Mine does the same when one of my teens does a wash that's packed to the gills.

Oh goodness, are washing machines going to start refusing to wash stains they don't like? Or not working because we've done 3 loads already this week? 😅

Now I know why my Bosch sometimes makes that last one minute last for far longer, always when I'm in a rush to get the washing out. They've developed sentience, haven't they.... 😱

AmeliaEarache · 25/09/2024 10:58

I think that time moves differently in a washing machine dimension. I have never had a machine where “time remaining” bore any resemblance to actual minutes

I’ve never experienced it being quicker than expected. Always longer.

Well I didn’t know that. Mines a Samsung too.

Mine lies and it does an intensely irritating thing of showing one minute left on the cycle, except that one minute lasts for about fifteen. Drives me mad.

Floralnomad · 25/09/2024 11:21

Mine is a Bosch as well , it will never be shorter because the time is set for the exact perfect conditions ie 4 kg or whatever of clothes .

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 11:22

It's not always an issue. But it makes you believe that you have time to complete a cycle and peg it out on the line before leaving at a certain time. And you don't, so you have to rely on grumpy teenage student son to hang out the washing which is a WHOLE other thread.

Proustinyourplace · 25/09/2024 11:31

Sometimes it also does this if the little filter thing at the bottom needs emptying. Mine was making 3 minutes last forever , there was quite the haul when I emptied it out, coins, hair clips, stones, jewels, empty pot noodle seasoning sachets (🙈). I live with people who don’t empty their pockets before they load the machine, apparently.

Nubbled · 25/09/2024 11:40

My Bosch lies too, and don’t get me started on the last minute 👀

dudsville · 25/09/2024 12:00

I know that mine weighs stuff as it tells me, so I put a timer on to see if I was wrong in my belief that my machine lies. A wash that was weighed and timed as a 1hr 6 min wash went over by 9 minutes. It was a boring bit of research, and what I learned is that somehow that 9 minutes feels much longer! I'm about to put a second load on, will time that one too.

Tradersinsnow · 25/09/2024 12:03

Bosch here as well. It's a lying liar that lies.

It's not because it's overloaded either. It just enjoys lying.
