Why does my washing machine lie?

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 10:22

When I start a cycle on my washing machine it says how long it will take to complete. For my most used cycle, that’s 1hr 11mins. Started a cycle at 8.45 this morning and it’s just finished, 1hr and 30 mins later.

also it counts down as it’s running, sometimes I’ll set it off, go off and do something else, come back 10 minutes later and the timer is showing longer than when it started!

I think it might be possessed.

Mine is a Bosch and also a dreadful liar.
I don’t mind it taking longer…just let me know so I can work round the timings!!!
Hate it!

Beth216 · 25/09/2024 12:05

In their information when trying to sell the machine they want to make it sound like the machine washes the clothes quickly because that's what people want. Then you find out it only washes it that quickly if you hardly put anything in there and takes much longer to do a proper load.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 25/09/2024 12:11

Mine lies too, it stops the timer when it's filling/draining water. (Yes I have watched it), it didn't move from the number it was on while the kettle boiled and the toast popped as it was draining, then filling to rinse before it started counting again. My 28 mins cycle is 35/36 minutes long no matter how much laundry is in there.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 25/09/2024 12:13

Mine lies when the filter needs cleaning. It takes more time than the initial program thinks

NCGrandParent · 25/09/2024 12:15

My Electrolux lies too 😢

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 12:16

I don't think it's a filter issue. And I get the logic that it might take longer to wash a heavy load, but why isn't the machine weighing the clothes at the start of the cycle and telling you how long rather than just adding on minutes half way through and hoping you won't notice?

OP posts:
DelurkingAJ · 25/09/2024 12:20

I had guessed that the sensors and telling it that water is still coming off the clothes in the spin cycle so it keeps going until it isn’t. Maybe?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/09/2024 12:22

I have a Beko
it is as honest as the day is long

halava · 25/09/2024 12:23

So glad I caught this thread. The mystery of the washing machine clock going backwards has been solved for me now!

I have a quick wash thing 14,30, or 45 minutes and I swear to God they are lying tossers. I usually use the 45 for everyday not too soiled stuff and I invariably add 15 minutes to my watch timer for good measure. Sometimes that's not enough either.

But now I know, I won't use swear words at an inanimate object anymore.

Soluckyinlove · 25/09/2024 12:35

I've decided that they work on "hospital time". As in when the doctor/nurse says they will be back in a minute or two................

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2024 13:05

I had to buy a new one last year ( usual story , the old one was over five years old, would cost more to repair than a new one , etc etc :(
Anyways, it's a liar too.
There is a timer , but it works to own settings and tune.

leefbee · 25/09/2024 20:07

Also got a Bosch and it's a fucking liar.
Generally when we are in a rush to go somewhere and DH says only 10 mins to go and 10 mins later it still isn't done.
We prob do overload sometimes (according to my mother) but it does it on smaller loads too.

Thevelvelletes · 25/09/2024 20:32

Oganesson118 · 25/09/2024 10:32

Ours lies too. It will often tell me there’s 1 minute left and it’s the longest minute I’ve ever known.

Ours too, that's when I start to panic that there's something wrong with it.
Dw tells me to stop watching it and let it do it's thing.

Mine is a Bosch. Wonder if they are particularly bad for telling fibs.

We have the same issue with our Bosch! Esp when jr says it has 1 min left for aboug 7!

Whereohwhereohwhere · 25/09/2024 20:35

My Bosch lies constantly. It's that bad it's comical.

My Bosch lies to me as well. Mixed load should be 1 hr 3mins usually takes around 1 hr 20mins. And let's not even dicuss what it says about the cottons.

I've decided to give it the slient treatment now, and we are no longer on speaking terms. If it keeps antagonising me, I will refuse to give it Calgon. Maybe, one day.

Once I'm through with it, I'm planning on moving on and replacing it with something more reliable.

Dearg · 25/09/2024 20:42

Siemens here. Just a Bosch that lies about its origins basically. So, as well as being a Bosch in Siemens clothing, it lies like a tart about every phase of the wash/ rinse/ spin cycle.
I write it off as too much soap ( I live in a very soft water area, it’s easy to overdose) , but now I think it’s pathologically programmed to fib.

Curlygirl06 · 25/09/2024 21:22

I have a delay timer on mine, so I put the washing in at night, set the timer and it's done by the time I get downstairs in the morning.
HOWEVER, here's another thought to ponder. My timer delay thingy can be set in half hour increments, fair enough. But the first delay timer display is 10 minutes- why? I can just about understand 30 minutes, 1 hour possibly but why would you want to delay your washing machine to start in 10 minutes? You could go to the loo, make a cup of tea and then turn it on then. Bugs me every time.

Ah that's interesting. We have really soft water and often get scrud despite cleaning our machine, maybe also the soap thing

SlightlyJaded · 25/09/2024 21:35

Another Lying Bosch here.

Most used cycle is 'mixed load' which is meant to be 59 mins at 40 degrees or 1hr11 at 60 degrees. I've sat and watched it display '3 minutes' for 12 minutes straight before.

I want it to be more like Microwave. Microwave says a number, counts down and pings. I might ask Microwave to spend some time with the machine and teach it how to count.

Eyesopenwideawake · 25/09/2024 21:38

My Samsung always errs on the side of caution but comes in under time, and sings to tell me how well it's done 😊

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 21:50

I live in a soft water area too. I’m not giving it the benefit of the doubt by saying “err on the side of caution”, it’s just a liar.

Frosty1000 · 25/09/2024 21:57

Mine lies but not in the way you're all experiencing - it says 5 mins left and then finishes early 😆

I've been a victim of the weight - cotton cycle takes 1hr 22 but half way through it's then 3 hours.

But that' last minute lasts a week!

Mum2jenny · 25/09/2024 21:59

They all lie. I put on a 1 hour cycle this morning at 06:30, it finished at 08:14. Really not good!!

Mamabear999 · 25/09/2024 22:02

I can explain!!
The washing machine timer was probably designed by a man, on man time. There was no awareness of the importance of time or he did it in badness to annoy us 🤣🤣🤣
