Why does my washing machine lie?

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 10:22

When I start a cycle on my washing machine it says how long it will take to complete. For my most used cycle, that’s 1hr 11mins. Started a cycle at 8.45 this morning and it’s just finished, 1hr and 30 mins later.

also it counts down as it’s running, sometimes I’ll set it off, go off and do something else, come back 10 minutes later and the timer is showing longer than when it started!

I think it might be possessed.

I have a lying Bosch too! I thought it was a random one-off!

Borborygmus · 25/09/2024 22:45

My Bosch lies too. I know it has a sensor which shines infra red light through the water to see how dirty it is, and adjusts the wash time accordingly. For a cotton wash I find that this normally significantly reduces the actual wash time. So IIRC the time starts at around 2:45, but after about 10 minutes it drops to 2:00.

IME the main reason for the time getting extended is where it finds an unbalanced load, so has to have several attempts (which is a slow process) at doing a spin.

It’s easy to catch her out if she is being dishonest about time left, but if l can’t trust her on this, can l trust her to tell the truth about the temperature?

Mine is a Bosch. Wonder if they are particularly bad for telling fibs.

Ah the "Bosch minute".

Ours is like this.

pearlring · 26/09/2024 05:28

Mine gives the time in the current action, so 1hr left washing then it changes at the end and says 12mins for the spin. Agree it's very annoying. Washing machines are definitely designed for the lab and not for someone who does multiple wash loads.

Flossflower · 26/09/2024 06:52

My Siemens lies too. It is nothing to do with how dirty the clothes are or how full the load is. It just likes telling lies.

Mine is definitely a him, what with all the lying. I'm now questioning whether the wee indicators of 1-5 to tell you how energy efficient the programme is are a big lie too.

I expect you are right about the sex of the machine. As we are in a male dominated world, l tend to refer to all things as her to try and redress the balance. But yes, in this case, him it is.

Floralnomad · 26/09/2024 10:57

All of my white goods are men as are my cars - Sylvester and Maurice .

Snowdrops17 · 26/09/2024 11:01

If it's heavier than the recommended weight for that wash cycle it will take longer .

TinkerTiger · 26/09/2024 11:06

Yes it’s about sensors as others have said. Mine stops drying when it decides it’s done. Does mean that it isn’t always dry 😂 but it’s meant to be more cost effective this way too, which it is when it’s a tiny dry

Mines a Bosch too and it is incredibly deceitful

I have a Bosch and it lies too!

Bosch washing machines are officially bastards 😬

CraftyYankee · 26/09/2024 12:35

I have hard water and a Bosch and it lies like a rug.

I just set a timer on my phone for whatever the machine says plus 20 minutes so I don't stare cursing at the one minute of death.

Anonym00se · 26/09/2024 12:37

Mine tells me there one minute left, for about 3 working days.

Zoflorabore · 26/09/2024 12:40

Mine is a lying bastard aswell. Also, at the end of the cycle where it is supposed to say “END” mine will sometimes show a display in what I think is Russian 🤣

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2024 12:48

Mines a Bosche too, had it a year now
Obviously they are the ' players' of the white goods world and not to be trusted.

Tillygan60 · 26/09/2024 14:21

Lots of machines have an "anti crease" thing at the end of some programmes, it just swishes clothes about for up to 30 mins! To prevent this, just press the pause or start button as soon as the 1 min sign appears.

My Samsung always errs on the side of caution but comes in under time, and sings to tell me how well it's done 😊

Mine too. It's so well behaved. Never given me a minute's worry. I like to sing along with it as well.😃

ForPearlViper · 26/09/2024 14:57

I only use the most basic programmes on mine and I don't think its sophisticated enough to have a lot of sensors. Even so, I frequently find myself standing waiting when the last minute on the 10 minute spin cycle lasts for five.

I also find myself thinking 'I beg to differ' with my car's satnav, it is massively over optimistic. Even if there was no traffic, the only way I could achieve its predictions is if my car sprouted wings and went as the crow flies.
