Car with a boot slightly bigger than a Golf

DP and I are working out if we can afford a new kitchen. The big thing we know will be coming in the next few years is a new car. We currently have a VW Golf which is 18 years old. It's perfect in many ways - room for ERF seats, small enough that the on street parking isn't an issue, but every so often, mainly when we go on holiday, it would be great if the boot was bigger. Roof box isn't an option as we have bike carriers that are almost certainly going to be in use when we're in the position to need extra storage.

Are there any obvious alternatives that are just a smidge bigger? The on street parking means length of car is a real issue, and in terms of the internal we wouldn't want smaller than a Golf. We'd be buying outright rather than going for a finance option (hence trying to work out how much we have to have saved!)

One of our cars is an estate, it's amazing the amount of stuff we can fit in it! How about a golf estate. Passat?

... was going to say they're not THAT much longer than a hatch back - the thing is if you get a car with the same size inside and bigger boot then it's going to have to be a bit bigger

Look at the VW T-Roc - taller than a golf but not much longer and great boot size.

I have a Honda HRV and the boot is awesome.
