Air traffic

I flew from Europe into London City recently. Flight was 1.5 hours. Gazing out of the window, (we were just above the clouds), I saw a total of 7 other aircraft at roughly similar height, including one approaching at right angles that climbed steeply above us. None were really in close proximity except the one that climbed. I was a bit unnerved by that one. I don't know what was happening above/ below/ other side. My window was just over the wing so view limited.
Has anybody else seen several other aircraft on a shortish flight?

Open Flightradar and you'll be shocked at the number of aircraft in the sky at any given time.

There is a lot going on up there alright!

I paid for BA WiFi on a recent short flight from Amsterdam to London.

I was mainly on flight radar and couldn't believe how many planes were around us! In front and behind us there were a ton of flights to and from Amsterdam, and obviously into London. We were in one of the stacks circling Heathrow and it was so impressive

Just goes to show what a great job all the controllers are doing.

If you look out the window at a busy airport like Gatwick or Manchester, on the way to the runway, you see the planes lining up to take off... the next one is starting to speed up before the one is front is fully airborne!

I always follow the flights that family go on. They jokingly talk about me stalking them 😂I find it quite fascinating seeing the planes queue in a straight line to get into Heathrow. I never realised they go as far as east London to join the queue. I just assumed they came in from all angles but logically I can see why that would be chaos!

Agree that air traffic control do an amazing job. I'm not sure I could handle the responsibility.
