What sauce for chop suey?

I ordered a vegetable chop suey (which I'd never ordered before) from our usual takeaway. The sauce was not as I'd expected (though I haven't ordered chop suey since the early 80s in Yorkshire, and I now 40 years later, live in Cambridgeshire). DH thinks I'm mad and he's only ever known a chop suey to have this sauce.
What sauce would you expect on a chop suey? Thanks

A kind of thickened soy sauce gravy, I'd say.

Gravyish

Maybe the regular chicken etc chop suey is made with meat gravy and your vegetable one isn't?

You could order at another takeaway next week and see if it's the same?

Mine always comes with a brown gravy / soy type of sauce. Thats how it should be, I'm sure. Why you ask ?!

StudioCreate · 25/09/2024 00:17

It's like a brown Chinese gravy here. Thicker than just soy.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/09/2024 01:10

What were you expecting and what did you get?

ODFOx · 25/09/2024 08:38

I was expecting a brown, thickened soy sauce type gravy. MSG, soy, cornflour type thing: not that appetising really but I was after the vegetables.
What I got was a mild sweet and sour flavoured sauce; thin like gravy rather than gloopy like the stuff you pour over the doughy battered balls, and not too vinegary. It was actually delicious, and much nicer than expected, as I wouldn't have ordered it if it said sweet and sour on the menu. But DH swears that this is normal and couldn't believe that I was so surprised. You have all replaced my faith in my childhood memories. Thanks Smile

I find this awful sweet and sour sauce seems to go on everything now. We ordered 3 different dishes from Chinese awhile back and they all came in that same sauce despite the menu descriptions being very different. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I agree that chop suey should come with a thick soy sauce type gravy though also probably haven’t had it since the 80s. 😂

Chop Suey is an American invention and actually comes from tsiap seui, which basically means leftovers so I am not sure that there really IS a standard one

CheerfulBunny · 25/09/2024 09:32

You're right - my dad's favourite King Prawn chop suey was always in a chinese-y gravy sort of sauce when I was a kid but every time I order it nowadays, it turns up with ketchup in it which is horrible. Is it a north/south thing?

Proustinyourplace · 25/09/2024 09:39

See I would expect the soy gravy flavour with a chow mein but I can’t stand the flavour I associate with chop suey, which is like a sweet vinegary ketchup type taste .
