Help me make sense of Euro 5 or euro 6 dates/emissions etc

Looking at used cars and reading up on the dates for euro 5 and 6 etc, I cant make sense of them

On wiki it seems to suggest that euro 5 for example, is cars from 2011 onward, but when we're looking on autotrader, some cars earlier than 2011 say they are euro 5.

There doesnt seem to be a way of checking what euro standard the car is easily without trying to calculate the emissions and numbers which is making my eyes go googly

You can check if its ULEZ free but thats not enough we want to ensure the car is euro 5 (cant afford any 6s). We dont want a euro 4.

Cars with zero tax for example are coming up as euro 4 and yet cars with tax are coming up with euro 5, this doesnt seem to make sense

We are looking at smart cars this evening.

I thought car sale adverts say what ulez category a car is in?
In your situation I'd shortlist cars suited to your budget and lifestyle then check ulez dates.

With a registration you can check the mot status on the DVLA page and one of the fields shown is the Euro Status.

I cant see the euro status on the DVLA page

is it the check mot service on the government website?

They do, they say whether its ULEZ compliant, that isnt want I need to know, I want to know whether its euro 4, or 5, or 6 (not likely to be 6 with our budget)

You need to check the individual car as different models will have made the standards at different times.

This looks reliable:

https://motorway.co.uk/ulez-checker

Yes it tells you whether its compliant, not what standard it is.

Parkers.co.uk is good for looking up car specs. Not sure if it shows what you need though.
