Sainsbury’s Smart Shop rescan warning

I used Smart Shop in Sainsburys this morning, selected for a partial rescan at the till. The lady said that one of the items didn’t show up so she would have to do a full rescan. I was surprised because I was sure I had scanned everything but at the end of the rescan she said that two items hadn’t been scanned.

When she said what they were I was 100% sure that I had scanned them as one was the first thing I scanned when I started my shop and the other was a loaf which the bakery cut for me and I double checked when I bagged it that it had scanned. I was told that I couldn’t have scanned them because the scanner said so.

When it had all been processed and paid for I checked my receipt. The fruit I had scanned first showed up on the receipt as my first item and the loaf as one of the last, they were also on my receipt again right at the bottom where the rescan had added them on, so I was being charged twice! I showed the lady and I got a refund but how many times has this happened to people who didn’t check their receipt afterwards and left the shop double charged and feeling like they had tried to steal something?

Unfortunately systems, and humans, fail sometimes.

Either she didn't see the items that had been scanned, because sometimes humans make mistakes or the scanner 'lost' them at that point only for them to reappear later - happens sometimes on our cloud based system (different type of system but cloud based) so if the scanners are cloud based then it's entirely possible they weren't there when she looked and then were there when the payment was raised if the system is cloud based.

I've had things double scanned at checkouts, I've done it myself at self checkouts. I've also had things that haven't scanned at both so I haven't been charged for them.

Nothing in life is, or can be perfect all the time unfortunately. It's why they check, and it's why you check your receipt before you leave so that it can be rectified if an error has occurred.

The system selected me for a check the first two times I used it. All was accounted for. 3rd time I was selected for a check again. Not playing that game. Walked away and shopped elsewhere.

I hate the system.

@GaladrielHiggins Did you scan the bread before or after it was sliced? Sliced bread and unsliced ones have different barcodes

I hope they apologised to you. It's a rubbish system

I always have a quick run through of what's scanned at the till just to make sure (prefer the big screen to the hand scanner)

But Sainsbury's doesn't allow you to do this, you just get asked have you scanned everything....well er I think I have but would like to check
