Abbreviations are driving me mad!

AIBU to hate all the abbreviations on this site? (Fully appreciate I’ve just used one of them). Why can’t people just refer to their child, husband, son, daughter, etc? Why the D this and D that? Spend half the time trying to work out who they’re talking about. Is it just me ? ?

wondered how long it would take for me to get told off. Turns out not long at all.

Pointing out that this is a boring old chestnut isn't telling you off, no one's going to pretend otherwise

EternallyDelighted · 24/09/2024 16:35

It's far quicker to type DD than my daughter all the time. Yes, it's occasionally confusing (DP for partner or parent) but it is usually possible to work it out from the context.

I think they’re a great idea - otherwise you’d have hubby, OH, beloved, dearest, husband, life partner, etc etc etc ditto for DCs.
D…. Whatever is fine.

Or the dreaded A, B, C, D/names of these people being Alice, Brian, Cathy & Donald with an explanation of who they are and a potted history 27 lines back 'and Alice said to Cathy that Donald's Brian said Cathy didn't tell Becca- oh, we need to add Becca, she's E in this and related to Alice through Michael - F....

Agree I hate it and it's just laziness.

I’m with you. Absolutely hate them. There have been a few where I’ve just given up trying to work them out.

Someone got in a bate when her abbreviation was misunderstood

She said a relative suffered from SM

Someone thought it was Sadomasochism- Turned out to be the relative chose when to speak or not.

It’s laziness surely not to write the entire words out.

Ddog is nuts- it’s adding a letter.

( I have a dog whom I love but I’d not refer to her as Ddog )

Far too many acronyms that make it tedious to follow.

How is it mumsnets fault that you cannot work it out?

Ddog, Dcat, Dfish... they're not even quicker to type than the actual words! 😂

Ooh @Fiofair you have caused others ( probably the abbreviations brigade) to take umbrage already!
Consider yourself roundly told off.

It’s a public forum - of course people will be irritated by Dabbreviations.

We are not all toeing the Dparty Dline.

MND / MS
FAQ
or any of the abbreviations that in in daily use by the rest of society ? Hmm

PepsiMaxi · 24/09/2024 17:10

Don't use them then.

HailtotheBop · 24/09/2024 17:21

I must be in the minority because I like Ddog, Dcat and so on. They're part of the family, after all!
