Prebooking seats before passport renewed?

Hoping to book a holiday for next year and will want to prebook seats. I need to update my passport. I think I can book the actual
holiday without having my new passport but can I select seats or will I only be able to do that once I’ve entered my new passport number?!

I fly long haul to visit family and book as soon as the flights come out. This is usually 9 months in advance. I don't remember having to enter passport numbers to book seats. It's usually only entered nearer to the time. I would never have renewed 9+ months ahead.

We booked a holiday earlier this year before we'd renewed our passports. Pretty sure we chose our seats at the time of booking the holiday. We only had to put in our passport numbers when it was time to do the online check in 28 days before we left. This was with Jet2.
