Is it possible that this happened? Horrible eye injury

Warning, I'm going to talk about a child being injured in their eye (maybe).

My ex boyfriend said that when he was a kid, he was in C&A with his parents and his dad turned round without seeing him while holding a jacket on a coat hanger, and the hook part of a coat hanger caught his eye and got lodged in his eye socket. Nobody could get the coat hanger out of his eye and an ambulance came and they got it out.

I've been retelling that story for years but it strikes me now that he made it up. He did like a tall tale.

Is it possible to accidentally lodge a coat hanger in a child's eye?

Coat hanger hooks are blunt with a rounded off tip.

I can't imagine how that happened to be honest.

Even if someone took a run up, I can't see it getting lodged.

My dog somehow lodged a clip from her cage through her nose, even the vet was stumped as to how, so, yes, weird accidents are definitely possible.

I would imagine they would have taken him to hospital with an eye injury though.

Does he have lasting damage from it?

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2024 13:17

One for one so far then 😁

He also rang a radio phone in and told them he had been given a monkey for christmas, but then again, maybe he didn't.

Yes it is absolutely possible

Crunchymum · 20/09/2024 13:20

This actually happened to me!! Well kind of....

It was in M&S. No ambulance necessary, It was more of an actual poke in the eye than a serious eye injury.

My mum was a bit shaken and they had to get her a chair and a glass of water as she was quite distressed. I was fine!!

Unless it was one of those wire coat hangers I can't see how it would get lodged in your eyeball.

Does he have form for exaggerating? Was the monkey actually a pet kitten? 😮

olympicsrock · 20/09/2024 13:20

Possible that it happened but impossible not to have lasting serious complications

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2024 13:27

He had no lasting issues, no hospital stay but he was weird and squeamish about anything near his eyes. Didn't need glasses.

The radio phone in wanted kids to talk about unusual christmas presents. He hadn't been given anything unusual but he rang in and told the lady he had been given a monkey. The lady said oh that's brilliant, stay near the phone and the dj will ring you and you'll be live on air. He was so nervous about it actually happening he took the phone off the hook and hid it behind the sofa.

I thought this story was absolutely brilliant but decades later I doubt he rang the radio at all so it was a tall tale about a tall tale!

Of course it’s possible. Eye socket and eyeball are different. It would take significant welly to get something blunt into an eyeball, but less so to get something into an eye socket.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/09/2024 13:33

Can't see why he wouldn't ring the radio? My friend called in to dedicate a song to me while we were at school 😂

The hanger thing could have happened. Have you asked him? Or ask his mum/dad for their memories of it if they're around!

I'd say if his lying is a problem in the relationship then I'd be bothered about this but if it's just prone to exaggeration/funny stories then it wouldn't really matter.

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2024 13:35

It was thirty years ago 😁 we were both 19 and oh what a laugh he was. He was prone to exaggeration though. And lying.
