Mumsnet seems to be on a roll of solving media mysteries so I thought I’d post mine!
I found a book in my school library in the late 90s/ early 00s but it felt outdated like it must have been written in the late 80s or early 90s. It was the last book in a series about a musical band that had fallen apart. The main character was a Gary Barlow type talented musician who had a band around him as he was charismatic enough to go solo (but I think it was American). He had a girlfriend that he’d ruined the relationship with because of becoming swept up with fame. Another member of the group had left and become a Buddhist monk.
A fee years later I found another book in the series that was about the band forming and getting their breakthrough record.
I think the cover was purple with a picture of the band members and they all looked quite 80s with big hair but I think the books were actually set slightly later.
I asked a few years ago but no one knew and it’s still annoying me, googling various things over the years hasn’t helped.
