Orthodontist - extraction?

DD saw the orthodontist this week and was advised she needs two teeth removed (pre-molars) to be able to have braces to straighten her teeth.
I’ve come away and having a bit of a wobble about them removing healthy teeth. I didn’t ask if there was an alternative - should I or am I just freaking out over nothing and it needs to be done for straight teeth?!

I had pre molars removed to allow a brace to be fitted the teeth need some space to allow movement, was absolutely fine and the gap is non existent

This is something many orthodontist are now moving away from and instead try to widen the palate. But of course it depends on the particular situation. I’d get a second opinion or ask if widening the palate is an option.

@LadyLovealotte she will also need a palate widener I believe

Ask them why a palate expansion device isn’t recommended. If her jaw has developed normally she shouldn’t need space for her teeth. Removing adult teeth especially premolars will change her facial profile negatively as she ages.

@Porridgeislife that is what I read but I couldn’t see any written evidence for that - would you know where I can find any?

If she needs both extractions and an expander it sounds like the palate is potentially quite narrow and the only other way to create a correct bite might be surgery to expand further which also carries risks?
As a parent I would ask what the alternative treatment options are and the reasoning for why the palate cannot be expanded enough with an expander devise alone to fit all teeth and create a good fit with the lower jaw.

@Moonopoly can I please ask how things are getting on with your dds orthodontic treatment? im in the same situation with my dd and having the same wobble about health tooth removal. my dd has had palate expander fitted but still needs 2 teeth removed, tbh her teeth are not that bad and she just has high canines that need correcting, the rest of her teeth are straight. Our orthodontist is very experienced with fantastic reviews so I should trust he knows what he's doing but as a mum I can't help having these wobbles.
how are you getting on?
