How long is probate grant taking currently?

(Have also posted this in money matters, but no responses. Thought I’d have more luck here)

Thank you for any advice!
Forms sent 9 August (my brother is executor)
no IHT forms/to pay - joint estate (dad passed January 2022, mum in May this year) - estate will be under a million.
Just me and my brother - apart from a few personal items, a straightforward 50/50 split of Monetary assets (property, savings etc)
I am hoping that once probate’s granted, my bro can pay me an interim payment as I desperately need a new car (is this ok as long as some money is held back for any liabilities/bills??)
Any advice or recent experience, thank you!! ☺️

It can take a while 16 weeks they quote but can be longer .

HamSad · 19/09/2024 15:18

Even once probate is granted you'll still have to wait until bank accounts closed and proceeds available. What would you have done if there hadn't been an inheritance?

HamSad · 19/09/2024 15:19

What I mean is, there's still some steps to be taken even once probate is issued

4 weeks online application with IHT forms already submitted

Isthiscorrect · 19/09/2024 15:24

It took 4 weeks for us. In July this year. 4 weeks to the day for the IHT code and then 4 weeks to the day for the grant of probate. Having said that DH (the executor) and our solicitor were both absolutely meticulous.

That gives me hope! In our case, there isn’t any IT 🤞

Waiting to receive the code very soon so I can apply probate .

Do the figures populate from their records when you enter the code online or do I need get the figures from the IHT forms?

Just had our letter with the code following a full IHT400 submission, and it details the code, then the gross and net values needed for the online probate application. Submitted IHT400 7th Oct and had the code back at the start of this week. Hoping the probate bit will be equally quick.

Wessiewoowoo · 01/11/2024 20:38

Ours was a bit longer due an error on the iht400 (very long story) . We have now submitted probate last week online , so we are just waiting. I hoping it doesn't take 16 weeks .

RosaMoline · 01/11/2024 23:24

To the recent commentators, ours took exactly 2 weeks from submission! I think the probate office have cleared any remaining backlog.

This would be amazing ! But we havnt even received notification that have received the original Will ( they have physically received it as we sent it special delivery ) . It's only been one week so im not surprised .

I did two probate applications this year. One grant took four weeks, the next was 15 days. The probate office definitely seem to have cleared their covid backlog and speeded up.

The children.

Wessiewoowoo · 08/11/2024 12:31

Merlin321 · 08/11/2024 14:42

Perhaps they could show the Land Registry how to clear backlogs. Estimated for registering long existing property is 17 months. (8 months so far ...)

Hope all goes swiftly to the new commentators.
recap of our situation:
probate granted exactly 2 weeks to the day of documents submitted
probate certificate received within 5 days.
bank (hsbc) took just under 2 weeks to release funds.
Good luck x
