What time would you choose to start work?

25 min commute, can start any time between 8am and 10am. If I want to avoid the peak busiest times, would setting off at 7:30 or 9:30 be better? Or I didn’t want to get up so early and also didn’t want to finish so late I could just do the usual 9-5…. What would you choose?

Have you got the freedom to experiment and see how the local roads are at different times or do you have to choose a time and stick to it?

I’d choose to start at 8 and then finish early but I’m an early riser so would much rather have a longer and more chilled afternoon/ evening.

ScottBakula · 19/09/2024 08:36

Despite almost all my working life iv had to start early 6/7 am ) I hate it and eould much rather start later and work into the evening.
But I think it depends on the commute , the type of work , and the work set up.
If your job normally expects people to reach deadlines by 5pm or people you have to communicate with either in your site or other companies have all gone home at 5pm it'd make working later hard.
If however it's more flexible/ people regularly work later then I think your be fine starting later.

You don’t have to stick to it. It’s WFH three days a week and from the office twice a week. And you can start at different times every day if you want, as long as you start anywhere between 8 and 10

I always choose to start earlier.

MuggleMe · 19/09/2024 08:51

I'd drag myself out earlier if it would make a significant difference to the traffic, would hate to be only getting home at 6.30. plus I'd feel on the back foot at work if I was getting in an hour after everyone else. In reality I'd leave late and get there for 9 but at least I'm not stressing about being later than 10.

InferiorDesign · 19/09/2024 08:54

I start at seven and get so much more done between 7-9 than any other two hour slot in the day. It’s incredibly productive, so I would vote for an early start.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 19/09/2024 08:55

Early. Less traffic and starting at 8 gets an hour of work done before everyone else arrives to cause distraction.

Mostly miss school traffic and rush hour leaving at 4 too.

WFH I'd start later 😅

sunsetsandboardwalks · 19/09/2024 08:57

I'd much rather start early and finish early.

Mabelface · 19/09/2024 09:00

At home, I start from 8, and could have chosen up to a 10am start. In the office, it's between 8.30 and 9, dependant on how trains and trams have been that morning. I like finishing at 4 cos all the local shops are still open/can see the GP or dentist after work.

Fudgetheparrot · 19/09/2024 09:01

I have this and usually start at 8, makes parking easier and avoids the traffic on the other end (5 o clock rush, hasn’t died down THAT much by 6)

Fink · 19/09/2024 09:15

I worked somewhere like this, without the WFH element. Beware that anything other than 9 - 5 attracts endless comment from colleagues, even though it's literally written in to the contract that you can do this. Working 8 - 4? People will have a go about you leaving early. 10 - 6? They'll complain about you rolling up late. More seriously, 8 - 4 runs the risk that there's an expectation you can stay later to finish tasks, until everyone else goes home. So you're essentially expected to do unpaid overtime. For this reason, I'd stick to 9 - 5 for a bit until I were well established in the job and knew the office culture of that place.

I am a morning person, so would do the early start, DH is not, so he would do the later start.
