Sir Keir Starmer declares gifts and freebies totalling more than £100,000 - the highest of any MP

Perhaps the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire needs his freebies because MPs aren’t paid enough. Or perhaps he’s just the knight commander of the most astonishing hypocrisy.

Wouldn't it be nice if instead of party loyalists trying to score points with 'gotchas', actually tried to understand the genuine, real concerns of voters. The sneering posters dismissing anyone who dares to criticise their choice of party are totally missing the point.
I'm a floating voter and can honestly say, that I'm totally dillusioned/depressed/uninspired by the current bunch of elected MPs of any political persuasion. We're not attracting the quality candidates we need, those who put the needs of the electorate first. We get petty sniping and 'whataboutery', it's like a school playground. Where are the people of vision willing to acknowledge their mistakes and put things right. It's so, so disappointing for the electorate who are desperate for change.

The headlines were, quite rightly, never ending and Starmer described Johnson as being "mired in sleaze".

He was, Stamer hasn't done any wrong, Bojo did plenty, inc lying to the nation, parliament & getting fined, a UK first for its PM, why else was he kicked out Downing street?

Well yes. Johnson’s one gift (of many) which he didn’t want to declare v 5 years of declared ones from Starmer. That’s what I mean by perspective. I’d prefer Starmer’s amount to be zero personal gifts, but to say he’s ’the same’ as people like Johnson, or ‘helping himself’ to all and sundry is a bit bonkers.

iwishihadknownmore · 20/09/2024 14:13

& what has that to do with Carries dresses?

Because she attended that one with the then PM.

It’s not difficult to understand that.

The fever over Starmers conduct is exactly why many people wont even look at politics.

Every aspect of your life, past present and future will be examined in detail and publicised whether legal or not and if it is all within the rules will be called "Criminal and Corrupt behaviors"

There is an argument to had over the rules but Starmer hasn't broken them but it is being used by the Tories to points score against him and Labour.

FOJN · 20/09/2024 14:23

iwishihadknownmore · 20/09/2024 14:13

£400k isn't his PM salary is it?

So you wont Starmer to be the only one not to bring his wife/partner? ok & how will that be portrayed and what questions asked?

Mail headline "Starmers marriage on rocks.. we need to know"

Its a donation, a gift... taxpayer bill = £00.00 - totally unwise but there is nothing intrinsically wrong with what he has done.

He's earning enough money to buy his own clothes, perhaps he could recognise the breadth of his own shoulders.

Perhaps if we hadn't got into the habit of making it normal for spouses to attend their absence wouldn't raise questions.

I don't actually care if partners turn up but I do care if their unnecessary attendance is used as an excuse to justify accepting gifts worth thousands at a time when the Labour party have just removed the WFA with the promise of more pain to come for the rest of us.

Behaving like freeloaders whilst demanding the rest of us make sacrifices to manage the budget shows very poor judgement just as having a party when you've locked down the country did.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 20/09/2024 14:27

It's true, MPs public and private lives have never been under so much scrutiny. I certainly wouldn't want to be an MP. I remember the Green peace stunt at Rishi's private house which I thought was totally out of order. I wonder if 'quality' candidates are put off standing for election because MPs are under the spotlight like never before. Something's got to change.

True. And since Labour have used the media to go after the last gov they can't complain when they do similar and get it back in spades.

Newsflash.

Boris is no longer PM - Starmer is. It’s his integrity in question.

It's the same old, same old for Labour, pretend that sleaze and back stabbing are uniquely Tory problems only for it to come back and bite them when they are in power.

I'd forgotten Blair also promised to clean up politics before he took us into a war based on something he knew was a lie.

Ah strewth, of course.

Dodgy dossiers, Campbell spin, Mandy briefing.

The hounded David Kelly.

DejaTu · 20/09/2024 15:27

The Prime Minister is facing a revolt from backbenchers over his refusal to stop taking items such as clothes and football tickets.
Several MPs have accused him of “hypocrisy” and “double standards”.

Senior figures are said to be “livid” by his decision to take so many gifts, with one MP warning it gives the impression “he’s more interested in himself” than the challenges facing the country.

Snout + trough…

Hounded ? I think there might be another word for it but I lack the evidence to say what most of us think really happened.

And who could forget this from just last year. It was a strange decision to blame Sunak for something which would inevitably cover Starmer in shit.

You'll have to point me to these people, most labour supporters or media don't agree with all of this but don't support the allegations of corruption, which is a criminal matter/for personal or business gain.

Anyway, too late, Starmer has blown it on this.

So clothes are off limits.

What about the football tickets, concert tickets and expensive spectacles?

This is too weird. Embarrassing.

Incompetent is an understatement.

I’ve just watched an an interview with a Labour mp who said that all MPs have always accepted donations and gifts (which I accept) but that Labour were different because they were so transparent.

which is BS given that raynor listed her donation fir clothes as ‘parliamentary expenses’.

They won’t give up the other goodies without a fight.

But hey, the broadest shoulders are reserved for the OAP’s, not Starmer and his merry band.
