Can I buy flat pillows?

Or can you give me your recommendations for shit pillows that go flat quickly?

DS (9) has been struggling to sleep since we had a house fire 6 months ago - we’ve been through every adjustment possible (white noise, set sleep/wake up times, sitting in with him etc…) but haven’t managed to replace his very flat pillow that he often says he misses.

I tried Primark but sadly after 2 months they’re still rather plump 😫

Not that I’ve seen them in person but a google search shows these ‘Low’ pillows from JL: https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-specialist-synthetic-3-chamber-low-profile-standard-pillow-soft/p5520498?size=Standard%20Pillowcase&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_home_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1xi-dk6VeRYSnntLaglyLykQ&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9Km3BhDjARIsAGUb4nyLypqHmfs5IH39B5S1qeAB9BqbOyRruGzShJy89dU3O4HvjWVc3dAaAhyVEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sorry to hear about the fire, that must have been scary. I know this might sound a little extreme but if it’s really bad how about putting a ladder outside your house somewhere (obviously not right outside his bedroom window!) so that in his mind, if it were to (god forbid) ever happen again, he has an escape route? I do know how this sounds but I live in a top floor flat and this really does play on my mind. I’ve always always thought that if I knew a ladder was outside somewhere at least I know I could get out.

Have a look at the Wool Room. They are very far from shit pillows, but you can add and remove filling to make them how you want.

BirthdayRainbow · 18/09/2024 21:27

Ladders exist that are folded and live on the windowsill then get flipped outside.

What about a cushion? I have a photo cushion from Boots which is flatter than a pillow?

I sleep on my front with a very flat pillow, just checked and it says slumberland on it

Mostlyoblivious · 18/09/2024 21:29

that’s horrendous, I’m sorry to hear what you’ve been through. Could you get a piece of foam from a fabric shop/haberdashers? They have various thicknesses

Re another posters suggestion, I remember looking into these types of ladders when looking at a flat to rent

I had a shredded memory foam pillow that you could take foam out of to make the right height. My other half likes a flat pillow too and it was great for him.

I hope you find a pillow that helps your DS sleep better. It must have been an awful experience for all of you.

Prisonpillow · 18/09/2024 21:30

No advice but bumping because my beloved ‘prison pillow’ as I call it is on its way out and I can’t stand anything thicker than about an inch. I even take it on holiday with me (but it doesn’t take up much room!)

spikeandbuffy · 18/09/2024 21:32

This says 5-10cm
Might be worth a go for the price, if it isn't flat enough then put it under your couch cushion and sit on it for a few nights!

Mine is slumberdown.

This presumably isn't an issue for your DS but my back pain has significantly reduced since I changed to a very flat pillow

TTC1x · 18/09/2024 21:36

Primark! The cheap pack of 2... mine went flat after 2 nights sleep. Heaven!

jollyfedup · 18/09/2024 21:36

What about a toddler pillow designed for young children? They always seem a lot flatter x

CatStoleMyChocolate · 18/09/2024 21:38

I was also going to suggest a cot bed pillow or pillow aimed at toddlers, one of my children has one and they are really flat. Hope you find something that helps him.

idnhxun · 18/09/2024 21:41

If none of the above work, buy a bean bag pillow. Moulds to the shape of your head!

SatinHeart · 18/09/2024 21:43

DH uses a Moses basket mattress as a pillow. It's very flat.

I had spinal surgery and the surgeon said to sleep on a flat pillow to keep my spine aligned
Funnily for 9 months post surgery I couldn't sleep with a pillow at all as I was a front sleeper and needed to be flat! I ended up on my front with a pillow under my hips

Doltontweedle · 18/09/2024 21:55

Do these exist brand new? I like a flat pillow and mine are so old they’re literally dark yellow 🤮 I’d be torn apart putting a pic up on here, I can’t sleep without them though 😂

Hey sorry to hear about the fire.
we had one when I was 16 and I was traumatised for about 18 months.

I had to have complete black out blinds and curtains, couldn't let in any light at all. Was horrible. I went round and checked everywhere each night, checked my escape route was clear (lucky bedroom was on ground floor.

Looking back I should have had counselling however my life changed in that I left school and got a job and moved house and I slowly was back to normal.

Love to you all ❤️

bebopalula111 · 19/09/2024 07:01

Would be also interested in the flat pillows so shamelessly following 🙈

HotCrossCat · 19/09/2024 07:10

currently I use this:
Adjustable height pillow

I can only sleep with a really low pillow, I have to take it away with me as most hotels and holiday places only have massive uncomfortable pillows.

CaterpillaNavilla · 19/09/2024 22:28

Thank you for all the advice! Turns out DH is also missing his flat disgusting brown pillow too so we’ll try a couple of slumberland ones and see how we go.

the fire happened in the middle of the day while we were all out so thankfully we were all ok. I want to sell up when the house is fixed and live in a bungalow (with no tumbledryer) 😆

but until then I’ve been googling escape ladders!
