The dreaded reorg meeting invite which includes HR

I know this won't answer any question but just need to get it out. Worked late online tonight and a meeting invite for tomorrow with the head head of the entire organisation came thro. Says its mandatory and confidential. Trying to stay centered and not get anxious, it is what it is at this stage.

Try not to worry (easier said than done!). You don't know what it will be at this point. Are you able to take someone with you? xx

DancingNotDrowning · 17/09/2024 23:25

Chances are they’re letting you go. Hopefully the notice gives you time to perfect your game face and think of what information you need to ask for.

I’m sorry.

Mamabear999 · 17/09/2024 23:27

Try not to worry. Hate people doing those things at night. They could have sent the invite in the morning. You probably will struggle to sleep now

ToBeOrNotToBeWhoKnows · 17/09/2024 23:28

It's a group meeting, sorry should have said. But yes agree it's one of 2 options....we are going or we are staying.

F*ck. It will be a long day, it's at the end of the day.

Thanks for both your replies. Appreciate hearing from someone.

I am sorry OP. I hope you manage to get some sleep.

anonhop · 17/09/2024 23:31

If it's a group thing hopefully it'll be a better package/ situation even if it is the worst case scenario x

Derwent01 · 17/09/2024 23:34

trust me i know the feeling, all the best op @ToBeOrNotToBeWhoKnows

ToBeOrNotToBeWhoKnows · 17/09/2024 23:37

Thank you all. Will report back. Even if staying it probably means a new reporting line and manager. Why oh why do these big f*cking corporations keep reorganising and eventually you go back to the org structure you started in.

I've been at risk of redundancy due to re-orgs 5 times now, each time starting exactly like this with a group meeting and Hr.

Every single time I've ended up surviving the restructure with a better job, promotion and development opportunities.

It's not always a bad thing. Listen carefully, look for opportunities, see what else is going on in the company and where you may be a good fit, bear in mind that if you are officially listed as 'at risk' and placed in a consultation period you should have priority for internal roles over people who are not at risk, so could very well give you a leg up to move to a different department if that holds appeal.

Urgh, we had a few of those last year. Although they managed to cut a lot through voluntary and eventually just got down to one compulsory, which was a hideous project.
Fingers crossed for you OP, it’s a horrible time.

i wish our result was undone, seems when theres new ideas its rinse and repeat with trying new ideas, which i can understand but then it does not make it easy for the workers on the shop floor so to speak

I've been part of reorgs but never at risk so thanks for sharing @InfoSecInTheCity. I'm 51 and in the company 15 years and think people like me are now too expensive and seen as v replaceable with younger and cheaper graduates. Skills knowledge and experience aren't as valuable to a company.

Went through this twice with my previous company. Both times initiated by a last minute invite to a group meeting with HR.

First time I put all my fight into the consultation period and survived, second time I spent the consultation period hunting for a new job.

Now with a new company, a promotion and a 30% increase, it was a blessing in disguise.

Either way, it will all work out in the end OP 😁.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/09/2024 23:48

If it's a group meeting it could be any number of things.
You don't know yet. It could impact you negatively or not. Once it's happening, make sure you ask them to explain how it will impact you specifically if that isn't seeming obvious.
But it's certainly nothing personal against you either way.
Just go with the flow. There is nothing to do now so no point in worrying.

JFDIYOLO · 17/09/2024 23:54

All the best, OP. We're around tomorrow if you want to talk.

StillCreatingAName · 17/09/2024 23:56

Another who has been through this and without asking you to overshare anything too personal, if you’re in a comfortable life position you might even see this as an opportunity to change direction after 15 years? Is there anything you’d like to change? Grab the opportunity if so, negotiate some financial benefits to your exit terms and don’t look back! It’s what I did, though I had major wobbles as my last day approached I’ve no regrets from that time, life is too short to go through round after round of possible redundancy.

charabang · 18/09/2024 00:47

Good Luck with your meeting OP. I've been through two re-orgs and been TUPEd across onto worse t&cs but at least I've kept my job. I'm 57 with a final salary pension so I know my employer would love me to go especially as they keep banging on about the pension costs. I hope it's a good outcome for you.

EBearhug · 18/09/2024 00:54

There are worse things than being paid to leave. (I was made redundant about 20 months ago.)

sandgrown · 18/09/2024 01:09

We had a meeting like this earlier in the week but it was just to tell us of a reorganisation of accommodation and a move to a new building. Less convenient but no jobs lost. Fingers crossed for you x

ToBeOrNotToBeWhoKnows · 18/09/2024 05:30

Morning everyone. This is MN at its best, thank you for your very kind and supportive thoughts.

Gut feeling is I'm staying but as a few of you said it would also be a chance to do life differently and that could be a good thing. FB pushed this to me yesterday and it has described most of my working life as it finally clicked recently that I am neurodiverse in a mainly neurological workplace. Maybe it's time to be a peach!

Have a good day.

It's a horrible feeling, I've been there twice. Just a reminder that it is worth asking about garden leave during your notice, assuming jobs are going. Frees you up to catch your breath and focus on next steps.

LameBorzoi · 18/09/2024 05:54

It's a horrible feeling. However, I have had a similar request in the past, and it turned out to be something that was utterly inconsequential to me. At any rate, making plans is better than worrying.

Glittertwins · 18/09/2024 06:01

Hope you got some sleep. I've had a few of these in the past and survived but other teams not so. I still dislike unsolicited emails from management to this day.
