Eurgh! Just lost my shit!

I feel like such a fool!
I work hybrid and last week I was disturbed by a man knocking on the front door wanting to conduct a survey about some local issue. I explained I was working and in a meeting. When I told him this he smiled and insisted it would take two minutes! Cos obviously his survey is more important! I snapped and said 'no I am working' to eye rolling from him.
He has just disturbed me again, I was concentrating on a tricky task and his 'policemans knock' broke that.
When I answered, assuming delivery or some such he greeted me with 'i came last week...'
I interrupted 'I am working I told you that, I made it clear I work'
He started to respond with 'yes but...'
And I slammed the door like a petulent teenager!
I feel so silly and now I am cross and need to calm down before I start trying to unpick this technical issue again!
I understand not everyone at home is working, I don't mind outside noise etc, or a first knock on the door, that is for me to manage but why call again?!

Unless you work seven days a week he won't know you are working that day. Try putting a note on your door saying please do not disturb, or get a ring doorbell that allows you to see/speak without you having to leave your desk?

MounjaroUser · 17/09/2024 15:12

Why wouldn't she be working on a week day?

Janedoe82 · 17/09/2024 15:12

You were unnecessarily rude and mean.

midgetastic · 17/09/2024 15:13

Sign on door "no cold callers"

FizzyCow · 17/09/2024 15:14

He sounds annoying, don’t beat yourself up.

Monicaaa · 17/09/2024 15:14

@LittleGreenDragons @MounjaroUser
I would have thought most wfh jobs are week day jobs, but i am willing to be wrong.

He should have taken No for an answer the first time, @Monicaaa - but he clearly thinks his survey is far more important than anything you might be doing.

Maybe you were a bit rude, but he was rude first, by pressuring you the first time, and by coming back when you had clearly shown no interest in what he was doing. Hopefully this time he will have got the message.

Monicaaa · 17/09/2024 15:15

@Janedoe82
Something tells me he will cope. Plus given his eye rolling at me explaining I can't interrupt my work meeting for his survey about car parking... I don't truly care.

OP posts:
ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 17/09/2024 15:15

I'd have done the same thing OP. Some simply won't take no for an answer and forget that some of us have busy jobs to do.

Monicaaa · 17/09/2024 15:16

Thank you @FizzyCow and @ImCamembertTheBigCheese
I appreciate you!

I hope so not sure what my next move would be!

Really annoying op, I hear you. I once ran downstairs from the attic bedroom to answer the door to a window salesman and was so annoyed yet HE ended up being annoyed with me as I told him, slightly out of breath, I wasn't interested! I now have a 'no cold callers' sign which mainly works, apart from religious callers who think it doesn't apply to them?

Monicaaa · 17/09/2024 15:18

Thanks to the suggestions of notes on the door, our house is a bit off the beaten even the JWs and canvassers don't find us, so hadn't occured to me before, I probably should do that

Monicaaa · 17/09/2024 15:19

@hellswelshy

Oh my! You unreasonable person!

AdoraBell · 17/09/2024 15:19

YANBU if he comes back tell him not to return.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 17/09/2024 15:19

Think I’d have done the same OP

So many assume because you’re at home you must be swanning about doing nothing

wasn’t like you hadn’t told him once already

ScottishSheepie · 17/09/2024 15:20

One of these signs could work 😊

I think just rehearse your "thanks, but no thanks, goodbye" line, but remember it has to be accompanied by closing the door if they're that pushy. Perhaps with surveys, you could say you're not comfortable giving your information to a random stranger at the door.

I know it feels rude, but some cold callers will stand there on your doorstep until you do this, which means you have to stand there and convince them to turn around and leave, while they use the fact you're still engaging with them to try to turn your 'no' into a 'maybe'.

I also think that some of them are so accustomed to having doors slammed in their face and people being outright rude to them that they view any polite engagement as a potential 'yes', despite the fact the person is saying no!

If someone refuses to take no for an answer and won't leave, I think the only option is to say something polite but firm as you close the door.

Most cold callers are respectful enough and just leave when you decline, but the ridiculously pushy ones won't give up until the door is closed.

50/50 he is being annoying but he doesn't know you are working and you were a touch rude

Why would you think that? Plenty of call centre types work from home and they do evening and weekend work, or even part time. I had to set up a passport interview last week and someone from HMPassports answered the phone Sunday morning 😱Some people even have a day off using their leave entitlement. Just put a sign up, or get that ring doorbell. He's not a mind reader and he is also trying to do HIS job.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 17/09/2024 15:38

I wish they would ban cold callers, it’s so intrusive.
I have a security camera, so I don’t answer the door to them full stop.

Elphamouche · 17/09/2024 15:51

You were nicer than I would have been

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 17/09/2024 15:59

The delivery drivers/postal workers know where to leave parcels.

The door doesn't get answered. The police will shout if they are breaking down your door or phone if it's less extreme.

TequilaNights · 17/09/2024 15:59

I despise cold calling, it should be illegal!
So I don't think you did anything wrong.

I do recommend getting a sign for your door, you can get nice sticky back ones from amazon for under £10
