Is anyone actually listening to Scott Mills in the morning?

Why - when there are many other good DJs out there - have they foisted this man on us in Zoe's absence?? I tried listening to him again this morning after giving up several times over the past few weeks and no - I just can't do it. Zero charisma, the inane shouting over tinkly background music, the complete lack of interest in the listeners, the boring drivel he spouts. The only positives are that Ritchie Anderson has gone (for now) and I'm discovering some great alternative stations.

YANBU

Haha! I remember finding him a bit shit nearly 20 years ago when I first moved back to the UK from Europe. I don't listen to much radio so was amazed to see him on a TV talk show recently - still a bit shit, still irritating and apparently hasn't aged for two decades (I'm assuming botox may have had something of a hand in that...)

SirChenjins · 17/09/2024 15:10

The botox would be in keeping with the time warp he seems to be stuck in. Who on earth shouts over tinkly music on the voice segments these days?!

Ive never heard him on the radio but he’s very dead behind the eyes on Race Across The World. No personality.

LadyDanburysHat · 17/09/2024 15:25

He always manages to sound bored and uninterested. I don't understand why they chose him and then Spoony covering for his afternoons. Spoony doesn't sit comfortably in daytime shows. I am just really hoping it's not trying him as a possible replacement.

I agree on Richie too, he is so irritating and the BBC are pushing him more and more to the forefront in other roles.

Houseplanter · 17/09/2024 15:27

Finest I had to find something else to listen to in the afternoon, now it's the mornings

I hope Zoe is recovering

Borntobeamum · 17/09/2024 15:40

Where is Zoe Ball?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 17/09/2024 15:43

I always assumed it's because he says "Yes".

He spent his first 5 years or so on Radio 1 doing a show in the middle of the night and covering for absolutely any one he could, including Sara Cox when she went on maternity leave. He eventually replaced her on drivetime when she decided not to come back afterwards.

Even after getting a decent slot, he always covered "better" slots, like the breakfast show.

I think he desperately wants the Breakfast show, he never got it on Radio 1, so now he's after it on Radio 2.

A lot of other radio 2 DJs also have a lot of TV stuff on the go, but Scott Mills hasn't really done much TV. So I think he will happily jump at the chance to do the Breakfast show, whereas a lot of the other presenters won't be arsed to get up that early in the morning.

Basically he's ambitious, and fairly versatile so gets asked by the schedulers to fill in a lot.

midlifeattheoasis · 17/09/2024 17:08

I can't understand why he's standing in for Zoe and then someone is standing in for him on his afternoon show! Why not just get another stand-in for Zoe?

Anyone know the answer to this? Smile

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 17/09/2024 17:16

Haven't listened to him since he used to sometimes fill in for Ken. He just seemed to be so dissinterested in everything, the music, the audience. His tone of voice is dull dull dull, and he was hopeless at Popmaster. Plus we had to hear every day about the bloody fiance. I guess he hasn't changed much.

Also started watching Race Around the World, not knowing he was on it. We lasted five minutes and turned over.

Readytoplay · 17/09/2024 17:20

I’ve met him. He was a bit standoffish, however I actually still quite like him and find him decent to listen to.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 17/09/2024 17:21

I really like him.

Sheepareawesome · 17/09/2024 17:22

I think he is better than Zoe. I can't stand her! Scott can be irritating at times but then I find most people irritating at times!

TBH I am a bit fed up with Zoe so thought a change would be good but now, although I find it hard to say, I think he is worse.
Find I am switching stations from R2 more and more now.☹️

DwightDFlysenhower · 17/09/2024 17:34

DSis and I have both swapped to audiobooks for our commutes, and DM doesn't switch on until Vernon. So the answer is definitely no in the extended Flysenhower family!

We did all try at first, and just didn't really enjoy him.

Giftwithpurchase · 17/09/2024 17:42

I wish they'd give OJ a decent slot. He's great and amazingly not irritating at all. I surprisingly like Vernon too - I didn't think I would but he comes across well

SirChenjins · 17/09/2024 17:50

This! He reminds me of the kind of DJs you get at party/wedding discos who talk over shit over the music, don’t play any requests and generally seem completely bored by it all. Not sure who the traffic person is but if she could replace Ritchie if/when Zoe comes back that would be great. I don’t often listen to Vernon as my commute is finished by the time he comes on but he’s much better than I thought he’d be.

I would say listen to radio 6 instead, but Lauren Laverne is off recovering from cancer and there are stand ins there too at the minute. She’s brilliant when she is there though.

DillDanding · 17/09/2024 17:58

I like him. And anyone is better than Zoe Ball.

Only one who wants to get up early?

Thank god I no longer listen to R2. Not one person I could bear listening to

Adventurerno24 · 17/09/2024 17:59

I completely disagree! It's been a pleasure having him on in the mornings and I have ditched my beloved Greg James! Zoes breakfast show is awful, and Scott Mills in the afternoon is awful. This just really, really works for me. Oh and I met him a few years ago and he was lovely!

Longlazyday · 17/09/2024 18:00

Yep, it’s works for me now.

Kangarude · 17/09/2024 18:03

Anyone is better than Zoe Ball in my opinion. Strangely enough, I find Scott Mills unbearable on an afternoon, but can tolerate him in the morning. Maybe it’s because he gives Richie whoever less air time

DramaLlamaBangBang · 17/09/2024 18:06

I too find him unbearable in the afternoon and swith to a podcast as soon as he comes on, but don't mind him in the morning.
