Should I give this child a toy that looks like them?

Please be kind as I'm genuinely trying to do the right thing.

For DS's birthday I'm planning on giving out some figurines as favours.

The cheapest way of doing this is to buy a set and split it up.

The figures in the set come in a range of ethnicities and sexes.

I'd planned to match the sexes to the children (as I know some parents are funny about male DC playing with "girls" toys) but do I also match the ethnicities? (One child is originally from North Africa and another is Indian)

I'm torn between it coming across as unintentional racism or whether it would be nice for the kids to have a toy that "looks like them".

DS's sibling is disabled and we personally like seeing representation but not sure everyone would feel the same.

Am I over thinking this?

Is this in a party bag? I wouldn't bother matching anything at all and just do a lucky dip.

I would also do it randomly, but I'd make sure that not all white kids ended up with white figurines accidentally.

My daughter is mixed ethnicity and I made sure she had dolls that looked like her. I wouldn't be offended personally.

Whatever you do, someone could take offence. Can you have them in a box and let each child choose?

If you're this worried about the optics, why not just go for something else?

tinymoon · 16/09/2024 20:38

I think it would be a sweet thing to do

TeaAndCakeFTW · 16/09/2024 20:40

Wrap them up and let each each kid choose one.

God! I thinks I’d go round and round with this one so I recommend a rethink to avoid brain-ache.

It did occur to me that if we are going for verisimilitude with the recipient we’d have to gift newborns potatoes or goblins and that wouldn’t go down well.
