So scared, throat not improving

I’ve had a sore throat for weeks now, sometimes it’s more painful than other times. I also had a white spot on the inside of my tonsil. I went to my gp who said my throat was red and inflamed and also a lymph node was enlarged under my jaw so they prescribed penicillin anti bis.

Two weeks later the pain came back so I had a telephone appt with the gp. They have now given me Clarithromycin. I only have a couple left and my throat is still really sore, red and the white puss filled spot still there.

However I am starting to really worry. When I spoke to the doctor she said to take these anti bis and if it doesn’t clear up then I must tell them because a prolonged sore throat could be concerning. She has put the fear in me that something awful is wrong especially as my throat is still sore.

Has anybody had a sore throat that hasn’t responded to 2 lots of antibiotics that wasn’t anything awful? This has been about 6 weeks in total now. I am freaking out that it’s the worst possible thing.

I did and was very worried! Was caused by silent reflux it seems. Was solved very easily with the correct meds.

Glandular fever can also cause prolonged sore throat. There is a blood test for it.

Really? Did you have any other symptoms?

I don’t feel ill apart from the throat. Will ask about glandular fever but I don’t have any other symptoms. Definitely not an sti.

It sounds like it did respond to the first lot though? As you said 'two weeks later, the pain came back'.

Me. For months came and went.
Had to see ear nose and throat dr. They put camera down to take a good look.

Gummybear23 · 16/09/2024 21:42

Was a strep throat.
They treated it.
Previously the antibiotics made no difference for 6 months to a year.

New drugs did.
Went and never came back.
Could turn into rheumatic fever or something if left.

I didn't even notice when I had glandular fever, its not always symptomatic. The only thing it did was a cause a bout of tonsilitus and I only found out the cause of that later on after blood tests. Tonsilitis can be viral or bacterial so wouldn't necessarily respond to antibiotics. Laryngitis can be viral. If it's something viral your body needs to fight it off on its own.

Also they might have prescribed the wrong antibiotic. I've had a sinus infection in the past that only cleared up after a third round of antibiotics. Different doctor the third time and they weren't happy at all about what the other doctor had prescribed and gave me a completely different antibiotic. The new antibiotic started working quite quickly.

I've had that happen I just needed a longer course of the same antibiotic.

I think that the dr probably didn't think through her comment very well. There are lots of things that could be serious if untreated. It could be quinsy, could be invasive strep A which could lead to Sepsis, could be an ear issue. It would be highly unlikely to be something like throat cancer which is pretty rare. The fact that the pain improved, but then ces back indicates an infection rather than someone like that.

Shuttheblinds · 17/09/2024 08:48

Yes it did improve after the first lot of anti biotics then came back 2 weeks later. It is t responding to the second lot which she said is the stronger anti biotic.

I need to make another appointment and see what they say, the last one was a telephone appointment so the doctor hasn’t even looked atbmy throat for weeks, so I will try to make a face to face appointment. Are they likely to try a 3rd lot of antibiotics?

Hi, how did you get on? Has it improved?

I have the exact problem. I was poorly with tonsillitis or Covid at the end of August and my throat is still sore on one side, I am worried to go back to the doctors
